If we've turned down €22 for Wimmer but are now actively looking at Sanchez at circa £35m, you'd assume we're fully expecting Saints to come back for Wimmer with the sort of offer that'll take the sting out of £35m. Still a big risk for £35m. I know that's the way this window has gone, but £35m for a relatively unproven (one top flight season) CB, and in an area we have the best pairing in the league. Seems an odd strategy at this point. I can only assume we are definitely selling Wimmer, and see more opportunities to play 3 at the back with Sanchez onboard, to justify the fee. Realistically we could have bought Benkovic or Foyth for less than half that fee, both promising and talented, and likely to be less demanding of minutes on the pitch at this stage. Potentially is that the difference, we're expecting Sanchez to have more minutes.

For starters, Sanchez won Copa Libertadores at 19, while Foyth is in bench for his team in same compeititon. Foyth could be talented, but he has nowhere near experience or success like Sanchez. Sanchez could come in & start for us straight away.

Wimmer is surely gone IMO.

Right question is - How do we improve the starting XI & increase compeititon ?
Sanchez potentially is a starter, so he does potentially improves the XI & competes with Dier. Dier in turn also competes with Wanyama for MF spot.
Well if we sign one of the best cb's in Europe (as some are saying) I think we can rule out dier playing in there unless injury and he sure as hell isn't getting in before Wanyama if fit. Won't happen anyway.
My point is Dier is said to want a move to United, I don't think this signing will help him get game time, if anything he will play less. I get the strengthening of the squad.

Fixed.

I also believe people give Dier a very hard press in a 3CB setup, I like him there. For me it's in a 2 where he struggles.

How is it low ball, when we actually agreed to their quoted valuation ? And 40m Eur for a 21 year old CB is low balling ???
Have Ajax stated that we have agreed a fee with them and that it is now up to the player to agree personal terms with us ?

Darren Lewis wrote it in his article yesterday. He was one of the first to break the story. Why would he lie about this ?
No idea- but it wouldn't be unheard of for a journalist to embellish. That said Lewis seems well connected with us and it be churlish to make up that kind of story. Thanks for the info

We'll also know that Southampton will be minted with all that fresh Scouse money too (from VVD)

De Telegraaf is saying they've offered to "double his wages to 60k euros a week"

55k GBP a week.

No...
Overmaars himself said 2 weeks back, 40m Euro is the fee for Sanchez, when Palace came with a 22m offer. So, apparently we have offered this fee, he now says we want him to stay, we will give 50k a week.

Am not sure, if this is positioning or trying to squeeze out more millions from us. Could be both
