Considering Michael Dawson's recent form, player of the season awards and England call up, I was wondering whether everyone would now conclude that even if Woodgate were able to regain his fitness entirely, he would not be able to get a starting place?

This is working on the assumption that he would be playing as well as he has done in the past.

Who is better?

Woodgate is probably the better centre back technically.

Dawson has been outstanding for us this season though.

Tough choice.

Dawson. Mainly based on his performance and because I don't think a fully fit Woodgate will exist.

Very tough, but I think Dawson is probably the best defender I've seen when it comes to defending high up the pitch, so I'll go for him. It's never really mentioned, but the amount of battles he wins around the half way line is incredible. The chance Palacios had against Liverpool was the results of a typical Dawson challenge around the half way line. He gets tight to attackers high up the pitch, which very few defenders have the condfidence to do, especially those without much pace, like Dawson. The fact he and Leds can play such a high line is the key reason why we can play without a DM. And if you want to play 442, with wingers, then perhaps you need to CM's who can play off either foot more than you need a DM.

If this is hypothetical and its a fully fit Woodgate rareing to go full preseason with no niggles there is absolutley no contest here. I love Daes for his heart and commitment and his performances this season but Woodgate (fully fit) is world class. We are talking about a plyer who has played for possibly the biggest club in the world. I can only hope that his prolonged lay off and what ever treatment he is getting will work (think I heard Harry talking about him as if he will be about next season so looking hopeful).

Just imagine if both King and Woodgate were fully fit and played 90% of games!!

A fully fit Woodgate no doubt. A fully fit Woodgate and King is the best partnership in Europe.

I went with Dawson, before this season I would have said Woody. But how can you drop Dawson, the guy has moved up several levels.

http://uk.soccerway.com/news/2010/May/08/redknapp-reveals-woodgates-injury-misery/

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp admits defender Jonathan Woodgate is struggling to cope with the strain of battling back from a groin injury that threatens to wreck his career.

The 30-year-old has been unable to find a solution to the persistent groin problem which has sidelined him for virtually the entire campaign.
While his Tottenham team-mates have qualified for the Champions League after the club's best season for years, the former Real Madrid and Leeds United star has been travelling the globe in search of an injury cure.

The England international had a failed trip to surgeons in the United States and has been forced to travel to Australia in a bid to get fit.
Redknapp is in constant contact with Woodgate and revealed that his player is at a low ebb.

"He texts me all the time - he has been very low, obviously," Redknapp said.

"He is at a very low point in his life. He is stuck in a little flat somewhere and he goes to the gym all day doing his work trying to recover.

"Can you imagine what his life has been like? He has treatment all day and he is doing recovery work.

"They have kept him out there so we will have to wait and see."
Woodgate had a hernia operation at the end of last season and underwent further surgery in early August.

He has only played three matches this season, the last of which was the 9-1 defeat of Wigan at White Hart Lane on November 22, and some are saying he might not play again.

Redknapp added: "He is a great lad, a top bloke, but his problem is that nobody can get to the bottom of his injury.

"You are better off with a broken leg. Aaron Lennon had the same thing - they said he would be out for two weeks and then suddenly it is five months. It takes time and even now he has not played 90 minutes.

Found that article from earlier this month, apologies if it has been posted before. Must really be pissing him off, just wonder how determined he is to play again.

This.

Woodgate at his best in the 18 months after he arrived was better than Dawson is now, but not by much. Unfortunately I don't think we'll ever see him at that level again, even if he does recover.

I'm not going to vote.....but fucking hell it would be massive for Harry to have this decision to make. C'mon Woody, get better.

I think that sadly, this is a bit of a non question because, as things stand, i can't see Woodgate playing again.

But, if i had to choose, i'd go for Dawson, his performances this season alongside King and Bassong have been outstanding. I also thinks he makes a better Captain than Woodgate did.

I voted Dawson because I believe he has improved beyond all recognition this season. His consistency of performances now is as good as any other centre back in the league.

Sadly Im at the point now of just assuming Woodgate will never be back. Hope im wrong though.
