Every time you watched him, you could tell he loved the experience. Players and clubs just click sometimes.

This was one of those times.

A proper Spurs player. Loved him.

Even more of a reason to hate AVB

I know the official line is that he went because his Mrs went to Germany but i feel AVB was a massive contributing factor also.

True legend of the game, not only during his stint at spurs, I've rated him highly ever since my scouts came accross him on championship manager 03-04 (Yes back then it was called championship manager). Had that fire in his belly, difficult to replace that or even to instill that in another player, kinda has to come from within. He was kinda like a shooting star in many ways, bright and beautiful but if you blinked, you woulda missed it...

So he should. It was the best football we have played in the 28 years Ive followed the club.

He was the missing piece of Redknapp's jigsaw. I can't think of any team at the time having a better balanced front six that we had.

That team could have done so much more. If Rafa had stayed, think of the players we could have attracted, with Bale getting better every season and his understanding with Rafa improving, they would have been gold dust in a trophy laden period.

Shame Redknapp got too big for his boots and AVB proved his tactics by numbers was an unbalanced formula.

Straight after reading the article, I jumped on You Tube to watch the master in action. It was great to see him again. Some of the goals he scored for us as well as Hamburg and Real were breath taking.

Really hoped he had stayed longer.

I'll always remember his goal against Villa. He fakes to volley it home, fakes a volley! The defender slides for miles leaving an open goal.

So good

Personally, I see no reason why VdV couldn't have buckled down and fought his place back into the team like Dawson did? But like like his career has shown, he's not the guy to do that.

What he had in bundles was composure and confidence. He managed to combine passion with calmness and had huge confidence in his own ability. Miss him so much.

Cause he wasn't the only one left fit in his position like Donkey was?

Saddens me to see people refer to a player who gave his all for our club referred to as a donkey, Michael Dawson may have been limited in some respects but he was a fine defender who played his part during a time where the club improved hugely.

As for Rafa, just a wonderful footballer and even though he was only with us for a short time he made his mark with a real passion for the club coupled with his undoubted ability.

Daws was a good solid defender who gave his all. He did well in the Champions League - definitely a lot more than a mid table player. Poor comment sir.
I'm a huge fan of Dawson and VdV but a team is made up of different characters making a direct comparison unfair. Ledley never lost an aerial challenge in the box, while Modric never won one. We had a great team under Redknapp but those players wanted champions league football and part of the reason that side broke up is we only had one year. If we'd have qualified again I'm sure some more would've stayed. There's a warning here for the team Poch has built. We need to qualify every year, or at least almost every year or players will go.

Bullshit. He found his level with Hull.
Lovely committed bloke but he was rarely, if ever, a top 6 centre back.
He didn't fight his way back into contention under AVB either. He found his way back because he refused to leave and everyone else got injured.
