I've been feeling pretty depressed about Spurs the last few weeks. Probably a massive over-reaction on my part... but that's what got me thinking about this thread. The premise is simple, in this pre-season period, what do you think the future holds in store for us? Are we on an upward curve, only to be enhanced by the combination of Chairman, Manager and squad? Or has this end of season done more than simply harm our present, but also signalled the start of a Liverpool type decline, are looking at a fight to make top six next year? Or are we in fact looking at something about the same? Fourth, maybe fifth, and a couple of cup semi-finals?

At the end of the year we can resurrect this thread and have a good laugh at the idiot optimists or doomsayers...

Glory. We are Tottenham, everything we do we do gloriously. We either succeed gloriously or fuck up gloriously, but there's always glory involved.

To get the ball rolling. No surprises from me, I think we're in the shit. I pretty much think we're on the slide, I hope we can arrest it, but whereas end of August last year I was predicting 3rd, if I had to predict now it would be sixth. And after that it's simply a matter of economics and momentum. :(

And with that answer I suspect the entire poll has been subverted :)

I bounced back quickly......which is to say I have been doing a lot of drugs.

But I feel that we could go either way depending on the actions over the next few weeks.

I know that when I hear Joe Cole and Rio, I feel that death is emminant. It feels like we've learned nothing and that age doesn't equate to a winner's mentality. A winner's mentality comes from the individual. But I try not to take it too seriously as I know its just rumors and what-not.

Then when I hear we are raiding the Eredivisie for the best of the Netherland's U21 side, I feel glory is assured. But youth takes time and that's a bit presumptive. Plus also rumors/what-not applies.

So as these things pan out, I think it will be easier to make a guess at the directions, because as of now, we're still the 3rd best side in the league, whose coach took a few weeks to dream of the England job. If Modric goes and we get Heskey, then I'll take to the gas pipe. If Bale stays and we get a bunch of players with double vowels, I'll breathe easy about the future.

I think it's positive that even those who are saying we are on the slide still can only see us falling as far as 6th! We spent the best part of the last 20 years praying for a top 6 finish, now it's seen as failure!

Next season, providing we retain our players, which I genuinely think we will do, and add Verts and Ade at least, we will be fine. More than fine. 5th place, minimum. Anything can happen regarding the top 4 next season

I'm generally positive about Spurs, but I'll reserve judgement until we've made a few signings and the Harry situation is dealt with. Not getting into the CL is a setback, and I think part of the negativity is in part due to the fact that up until February we'd pretty much all thought it was signed and sealed, we were pretty much booking our flights then it all went, well, you know. Levy is a excellent chairman, and thanks to him we are exceptionally well set financially so even we we suffer a blow like we have, we always have a solid base to work back from.

We'll be fine, it's a big summer for us and I hope we get it right. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy the Euro's and the cricket.

And Rio's never won anything?

The players specifically brought in for their winning mentality, who I would say were Willy, Scotty and perhaps Brad, have brought just that. They are not the ones who wilted under pressure. They have also brought a lot of undimmed ability.

The only other players I would vaguely class as veterans are Carlo, Ryan and Louis, all of whom have been cheap and, importantly, cheerful benchwarmers, which is precisely what they were signed as.

Mostly we are being linked to Rio and Joe because they are known to Harry and journalists are lazy fucks. But if Harry thought they could still do a job for us, I would trust his judgement. Because if there is one thing Harry is it is a good judge of a player.

And how old a player is might affect Daniel's asset depreciation calculations, but for the 90 minutes on the pitch it is not important. If you are good enough, you are young enough.

And just because we sign the occasional veteran on a short contract it does not mean that we do not bring through youngsters and it does not mean we do not target talents in their prime - if we can get them. It is not lack of ambition that holds us back - it is lack of pulling power and our inability to piss money.

The legitimate concern is not who we can sign, it is who we can hang on to. If Modric, Bale, VdV and Ade all stay we are still going to be in the fight for top four and the hunt for cups. But if they go we will struggle to replace them with anyone better, then we might just be grateful to sign a player who is bit long in the tooth but can still do a job, as when Arsenal lost Fabregas and Nasri and brought in Arteta and Benayoun.

Glory.. our actual last end of season spurt had its moments of crap but wasn't so bad, it was the run preceding it that did for us. Hopefully that situation is now behind us. We look to be signing an exciting young defender who can play the ball out of the back, and the names we've been linked to aside from him are in the main good - young(ish) skilful players the type of which we've successfully speculated on before. We may not buy a big star but we're potentially building a really good squad here.

One way or another is not going to be somewhere in the middle as that isn't the spurs way

I am finding it hard to give a definitive answer yet. It will all come down to signings and Harry. I don't think we will slide necessarily but others will improve making our job much the harder.

So I think the time to pass judgment is in the coming month or so when we have hopefully made a few signings, have some strikers and have strengthened in areas we need to. But as importantly have learnt how far our competitors will push the boat out for both playing staff and management.

Really? for a team that for 15 years never finished in the top 6 or bottom 6 of the league we were hardly spectacular in anyway, more lower middle of the road

Its only your/our emotional investment in the club that make it seem more dramatic than it actually is

We were gloriously mediocre in those days
