I am still confused about the 12 month rule. I seem to remember Pompey originally signed JD on loan which converted to a permanent deal after the deadline. Does that mean we would have to sign him on loan first ? Also since he was signed on the last day of the deadline does that mean we cant sign him until Jan 31 ?

Or does the 12 month rule only apply to loans ?

Sorry if this has been clarified before ! If so I missed it.

The rule L19 states:

A Club which transfers or cancels the registration of a Player may not apply to register that
Player within a year except with the prior written consent of the Board.

There are a few ways around it. We could

1. Just apply for special dispensation which we'd likely get.
2. Agree a pre-contract agreement with Portsmouth, who would loan him to us until the summer when the contract would become active and he would be registered as a Spurs player.
3. The rule mentions registering, not buying players. Technically there's no reason we can buy him now, and register him on the 3rd February (he was registered for Portsmouth on the 2nd Feb). Registrations can happen at any time, like KPB's, Ghaly's, etc.

There are probably other ways around it.

Punky has got it all!

But pretty much if we do want him and we get a bid accepted, he will come to us no problem. It will be within the transfer contract allowing for him to move to us, the FA will have no problem with it.

Whats the betting he scores on his 2nd debut, if a 2nd debut is technically possible that is, good scape goat if he doesn't though, it wasn't his debut for Spurs.

Thanks. It does seem that they would have to loan him to us first otherwise he could not play until February. The special dispensation seems a bit iffy. So there are no restrictions on loans and loan backs ?

I haven't see any restrictions on loans within reason. I think option 2 is the last resort. I think we'd have a good shout under option 1 as the rule was put into place to prevent abuse of the system of which this certainly isn't. Option 1 would be best as it would be instant and mean he wouldn't be cuptied and able to play against Portsmouth.

well the story flying around atm is that We are looking to waive the 4million they owe us, and pay £8million.

I would have thought it would be a good idea to send a player, if not two on loan there. I do like pompey (im at uni there) and i would hate to see them go down or fall apart! The place is so much happier!

Perhaps we would buy him back for the same price and waver the £4 million they still owe us.

They have just got 30m for Diarra so I imagine the 4m is not so much of a factor for them now. But these days nearly every deal is paid in instalments so I guess whoever signs him it would amount to the same thing.

As far as i am aware, & this was confirmed to me over 1 month ago, Defoe is eligible to rejoin Spurs any date after January 31st - however, as the 31st falls on a Saturday this year the transfer window at midnight 2nd February. Which means i suspect Defoe will sign officially on the 1st Feb. Also i might add, that he is also eligible to play in the Carling Cup due to the fact he was an unused sub in the home defeat to Chelsea for Portsmouth in the competition way back in September - here were the lineups -

Portsmouth: James, Johnson, Pamarot, Distin, Hreidarsson, Utaka, Mvuemba, Kaboul, Hughes (Wilson 80), Belhadj (Armand Traore 69), Crouch (Kanu 69).
Subs Not Used: Ashdown, Defoe, Djimi Traore, Little.
Booked: Hreidarsson, Hughes, Johnson.
Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Terry, Alex, Bridge, Belletti, Ballack (Ferreira 69), Lampard (Sinclair 74), Kalou, Malouda, Drogba (Di Santo 79).
Subs Not Used: Cudicini, Obi, Mancienne, Stoch.
Booked: Ballack.
Goals: Lampard 36 pen, Malouda 45, Lampard 49, Kalou 64.
Att: 15,339 Ref: Steve Bennett (Kent).

Nice one punky.

I never actually properly understood the rule when it was floating about that Keane was on his way back. Now its clearer.

So he can sign for us. Thats all I wanted to know.

Will he be able to play in Uefa? I know there is some rule about being able to register only one player who has played the competition so far, but because Pompey are out would the rule apply to him?

Sorry about all the questions. Im so confused but full of excitement that he could be coming back!
