I don't get this. Why would a current England International go to Canada? He's in the England squad now, so Hodgson is obviously content to pick him even if not playing every week. The other thing is, if he is a current England international, and as good as everyone says, then why isn't a top team coming in to buy him? In fact, why is no Premier League team wanting to buy him - why is Canada the only option? I think other clubs will be linked soon. Still think Newcastle is a possible.

^ Agreed, can't see this happening before the World Cup. If he does leave in Jan I can't see him going to Canada, he may as well retire from International football if he went there. It's his last chance at a World Cup, I can understand him wanting to play but he'll wanna play over here.

If Canada happens it will be in the summer after the World Cup IMO.

Supposedly a £6m fee too. I'm a bit meh about him leaving to be honest he doesn't seem to do it when it really matters but performs well in the lower lge opposition for Europa / Cup games. Will be a loss for the squad as he 'done a job' but he's always been the one on the periphery when we have a few strikers (Berbs, Keano, Crouchy, Soldado even Mido & Saha were all picked ahead of him) which tells me that he's never been rated too highly within the coaching staff (although I've no doubt Arry will say he's still a "top top player" and "one of the best I've had")

Hopefully this means a replacement has been lined up and Soldado doesn't start playing in EVERY game.

Wish him well and I've got no doubt he'll tear up the MLS

Absolutely. It makes no sense to go to Canada until your top flight career here is completely finished. Or unless you want to earn 20-30k more than you can here?

Surely Defoe is more interested in playing at the highest level possible, for the next couple of years, than an extra £1m per year in wages?

He certainly doesn't stop banging on about how important it is for him to be selected for England.

Love JD but not gutted by the news. The time has come. We better have a striker or 4 lined up for Jan

I'd rather keep him as he wants to play here, he is a good 2nd/3rd choice striker. dont get why we dont go 2 up front and use him.

he score goals. we lack goals....

I personally think Defoe loves the club more that the club loves him. I see no need to disrespect the guy even if he does spend a great deal of time offside. At least he's one of the few players who ALWAYS seems to show he wants it when he's on the pitch, be it as a sub or a starter

I'n not denying he doesn't love the club but let's be honest everytime we bring in a new striker and it looks like he's not going to be first choice we hear about him having to leave to further his England chances. This is the opposite to what Dawson did in the summer. Don't get me wrong he is one of my favourite players over the years, love the way he strikes a ball top corner and would wish him all the best.

I won't jump for joy if he goes like some others on here but I don't think Defoe is the answer. He's too similar to Soldado so if he wants first team football(and I don't blame him at this stage of his career) then I'm not too fussed if he leaves. This is assuming we get another striker who offers something different to what we already have.

Also, can you please change your Avatar? Its depressing me :(

This is a weird story. Defoe seems really keen on going to the world cup and he's a big family man who apparently still goes to his mum's for dinner every weekend. Maybe Hodgson has already told him that he's behind Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck , Lambert, Rodriguez and Carroll.

Good luck to him if he does leave.

Defoe hasn't really improved his all-round game significantly enough for him to have a lasting career. He is limited and currently doesn't look good enough for a team hoping for top 4.

He always talks about his desire to play football and loves to score goals. He'll be able to do both in Canada and get one final big payday.

I've no problem with Defoe. I don't consider him a legend or a hate figure. I think it's time for both Defoe and the club to move on.

I don't think he'll be going to the WC either way.

I've read there could be truth in this rumour as Darren Lewis at the Mirror knows Defoe well and usually has good info on Spurs.

Theo Delaney said that it was on but was put on hold this week which he reckons is to do with the manager situation because a new manager might want to keep Defoe.

Any manager who wants to keep Defoe shouldn't be a Spurs manager.

It's not Defoe's fault; he is simply not good enough for us at this stage of our development. Every premiership defender knows how to negate him. Good luck to him wherever he goes but go he must.

His family really like it there and would all move over with him apprently? Also house hunting already.

Seems to be very high up list!

Only other club i could see him going is west ham. But doubt that due to sams style of play.

I would rather he stayed thou tbh!

Hearing another striker could be coming in thou but more of a target man than defoe.

Maybe he's spoken to Roy about it and has been reassured that if he stays fresh and fit in Canada and bangs the goals in it will not be detrimental to his chances of World Cup selection

Roy already knows what he can do - to be honest he'd probably be better off playing week in week out and scoring goals so his confidence is high than sitting on our bench most games.

Beckham was still selected for England while playing in the MLS

I think Defoe would still get the chances to compete for his place in the preliminary world cup squad even if he was playing in Canada

I don't have any bad feelings against the guy but he's not exactly the bastion of loyalty.

He put in a transfer request the save evening West Ham were related and moved to their biggest rivals.

He put in a transfer request as soon as he was 3rd to Keane and Berbatov.

Left Portsmouth almostimmediately for us, a much bigger club

Now Soldado is here, he is appearing to be leaving at the first opportunity.

Again, I doubt blame him for looking out for himself first, and grateful for the goals he did score but it needs to be said.

What he's done to West Ham and Portsmouth has no significance, he should only be judged on his behaviour as a Spurs player.

He never handed in a transfer request with us, and he was with us for 18 months after Berbatov was signed (so, lets say, 15 months after Keane and Berbatov were clearly first choice as that happened pretty quickly). He also played second fiddle to VDV with Crouch, then with Adebayor, for two seasons.

Berbatov, Keane, both of whom I love, left when they were first choice players (I dont' hold grudges by the way, still love them both). Same with Bale and Modric. Better players who could attract bigger clubs yes, but they still left when they were darlings of the club. VDV left as soon as AVB came and made clear he wasn't part of his plans (yes, I'm aware that there were personal issues to deal with).

Defoe has been second fiddle for most of his career with us and never handed in a transfer request, even if he has grumbled. He was second fiddle for Keane for the entirety of Keanes first stint with us, and he became second fiddle the very season after he was our top scorer as we qualified for the Champions League for the first time. He has scored a lot of goals for us (not a magnificent rate, but a very good one) and he's played as well as he can for us within his limitations. He signed when he was young, he stayed through his prime (only leaving when Ramos made it quite clear with his selections that Defoe was never going to get a look in), and even if he is a selfish player/ single minded player/ player who offers little other than a good highlights reel (I don't believe that, this is hyperbole), he has been a good player who has definitely shown commitment to the club. One thing I will never accuse him of is disloyalty. He even left a club where he was the main man (Pompey) and way above us in the table to return to us when we were in dire straits (okay, I'm sure a big heap of money was involved too) despite the fact that he'd been a reserve for us since Autumn 2005 when he'd first left. As far as I'm concerned, we're the one club he has been loyal to, and if he feels the need to leave because he thinks his career (whether financially or in footballing terms) is better served elsewhere, I will only remember him as having been loyal to us and having score some wonderful goals, some important goals, and generally been a better forward than most of what I've seen during my Spurs supporting life.
