Defoe's Contribution

After last night's game, can anyone in their right mind say that Defoe is a one-trick pony, a player who only knows how to shift and shoot and doesn't contribute anything else to the team's overall game? Absolutely creazy if people still say that. His running to create space for Bale for the 2nd goal, and his wonderful vision to pass to bale for the 3rd goal were simply marvelous and very very "team-contributing". I don't knw what else he needs to do to shut up the doubters. True, he has his limitations, but so does Bale and so does everyone else, so give him his full credit because he has been magnificent for us this season.

Well done, JD. I, for one, am proud of your efforts. Keep it up!

Absolutely. I was saying this to somebody the other day but he has been making passes like the one to Bale for the 3rd all season so far. The strength to hold of Ferdinand who has lost pace but not strength was impressive. Works hard closing the ball down as well.

not meaning to be contrarion but he wasnt a passenger by any means and his contribution was a lot more than you give him credit for

Agreed that he wasn't a passenger but by no means is he a lone forward. In any shape or form.

He made a great run for bale to get his goal and then made the third as well. Played very well yesterday

Has done well for us so far this season but was anonymous for the last 35 mins yesterday. Npt his fault really, the way United were pushing us back we needed a hold up player like Ade

I was thinking to myself that he was having a good game then he opted to force a stupid shot when he should have held onto it. The Sig showed him up a few seconds later.

It's a team game JD, its not always about you.

He played a good part in two of the goals so he should get credit for that.

We were really struggling at the end to keep possession and relieve the pressure. Defoe got the ball and had two defenders directly in front of him but still shot instead of running to the corner flag. Ridiculous decision considering there was no way for him to get a shot on.

I love that he is contributing but Ade on top of his game offers us so much more.

Some decision making issues, but his all round work was good today. When Scholes closed his eyes last night i bet he could see Defoes image as he did his part for a long time in pressuring him when on the ball.which worked as we were happy for Ferdinand and Evans playing the ball out as opposed to Scholes. When he ran out of gas and support you could see Scholes getting on the ball more and dictate the game, even if it did go sideways most of the time.

I've never been JD's biggest fan but he certainly played his part yesterday for the 2nd and 3rd with some (un-Defoe like) unselfish play. If he can bring that into his game more often then he may well change my view on him as I was impressed last night.

Would be interesting to see if this is because he's now had a run of games and no longer feels like he has to score every time he gets the ball. I hope we start to see a Defoe who is equally as happy to provide an assist as he is to score himself

wow lots of overreaction. defoe DID EVERY LONE STRIKER'S JOB by creating space for bale. not really sure how that proves he is a footballing genius. defoe had a decent game, but he was awful in the last 15 mins. when you get the ball with a lead, hold onto it. do not look for walls to run into and subsequently give back possession. he alone probably allowed manure another 1-2 mins of possession because of his wanting to score a goal 1 vs. 3.

defoe is a great finisher, however his footballing iq is tantamount to his height. he needs to learn that blasting shots from 30 yards out when we need to retain possession to ease the pressure is not always a good idea.

Defoe did well yesterday when we were in possession no doubt about it. Without him we wouldn't of won yesterday, simple as that. However he still doesn't work hard enough off the ball for me, and the pressing has to start from the front.

He should of taken it to the corner late on, that really frustrated me.

He does deserve credit though and he is improving - he's more selfless than Bale at the moment that's for sure. However Adebayor is much the better player for this system and our overall effectiveness as a side will go up several notches when he comes in.

But its great to have different forward options to apply in different circumstances.

I'm not a big Defoe fan but he has been utterly class this year. His work off the ball has been relentless as well. There's been times this year like 1st half of QPR and yesterday 2nd half when the team haven't all been doing what they should be in the system pressing and positionaly. Defoe the whole time though has been doing his job, chasing the CB's and keeper down. Well impressed

I've always had a soft spot for Defoe despite his limitations though (why am I talking to myself :))

Defoe can't do what Adebayor can do but then Adebayor can't do what Defoe does it all depends on the style of football you want to play.

Does anyone seriously believe that had Adebayor played yesterday we'd have won 3-0 instead?
Defoe contributed to a couple of goals in a 3-2 victory at Old Trafford, there are very few strikers in the whole world who have done that in the last 2 decades so in the context of the result I very much doubt we would have done any better with Adebayor playing.

Most of us from the start of the season would have Adebayor in the team over Defoe but his goals and performances warrant his inclusion and AVB should be applauded for his loyalty to a player who has received very little from his club and country previously.

I find it ironic that people criticise Defoe yet can't criticise Sandro or Dembele for their second half performances and in the ratings threads were getting 8's and 9's. They were fucked 2nd half and gave Carrick and more importantly Scholes so much time and space. But like with Defoe they deserve all the credit for what they did to achieve the result and the never say die attitude.

Defoe gets a rough ride, yet his contribution this season has probably been the most significant.

I'm taking the middle ground here. He has improved loads
since the arrival of the greatest manager of all time.
Still he should have passed on a few occasions yesterday
or done better when he got behind them in the second half.

Can we stop kidding ourselves that he's a better option than Adebayor? He's a stop gap forward at the moment - his strongest position is (and always has been) as an impact sub.

Is anyone actually doing that, though? Looks to me just a case of giving credit where it's due. About half this forum wanted (and quite a few expected) him gone once Andre took over.

AVB has no other choice (Dempsey maybe?). He's being smart in keeping JDs spirits up when he has little choice with Ade out.
