Defoe's Contribution

Defoe played well yesterday but for me the second and third goals whilst good work from Defoe actually said more about how poor defensively United are as a team these days.

The second the two centre backs for United were too far apart and then committed the cardinal sin of crossing over where Ferdinand should have passed Bale onto Evans and then followed Defoe's run.

The third goal once again Ferdinand should have never let Defoe cut in from the position he was and because of this it allowed Bale to run into the space Ferdinand had left to cover Defoe out wide.

Yeah, bit of both though IMO. Bale's off the ball run against Reading opened up the space for Defoe's second there as well.

Had Defoe not made the run yesterday, the goal wouldn't of happened - but the defending was poor.

Oh I agree that Defoe's run was a contributing factor in the goal but if Utd had defended it properly then Bale would have had a much hard time scoring than he did. I actually think Ferdinand gave up on it a little as he thought that Bale on his weaker foot was never going to score from there.

It's very unfair to call him a one trick pny. He has at least two tricks. Shifting and shooting.

No, I jest, that's unfair, he has three. Shifting, shooting and being offside.

I actually thought he worked hard (for him) yesterday, and did good things for two of the goals, but I'll still be glad when we get Adebayor back.

It was Evan's mistake brought about by Defoe basically - that's how I would sum it up. Ferdinand just ended up being horribly exposed by Bale's superior pace in the end.

He did well yesterday but I'm excited to see how we'll do with a fit and motivated Adebayor back in the side, we'll improve overall as a side for sure.

But when the fuck is Ade going to be back and fit enough to start? I'm hoping the Chelsea game.

Please note the difference between criticising and over-the-top praising. Just because I'm not doing the latter, doesn't mean I'm doing the former.

He played well. They all worked their socks off. He's just not as super as was being painted.

All 3 goals yesterday were all Defoe involved.

1-0 Defoe runs to the left forward position taking a defender with him clearing the space for berol to run into and score.

2-0 defoe run crosses the CB'S and allows bale room and space to score

3-1 his hold up and pass to bale was quality.

Defoe was hugely instumental in all 3, this off the ball running has made Defoe a more imortsnt and effective member of the team.

Do not underestimate his contribution yesterday, without his runs the scores would likely be different.

Even if Ade is fit Defoe will keep his place IMO. AVB has put his faith in him, and Defoe has paid him back.

Defoe normally stops scoring around xmas when the games get more important. So it shouldn't be too long before Ade is back in the team permanently.

So what's over the top praising and can you cite examples in this thread? All I see are people praising and highlighting Defoe's massive contribution to the result yesterday and rightly so. Ade has fuck all to do with things (until he is fit and ready) and says more about people's over-willingness to talk about their opinions and what matters to them.

I'm sure it's not your intention, but you do sound like you wouldn't mind one player doing badly if it means the player your prefer getting into the side.

Don't get me wrong, I believe that long term Adebayor will get into the side and will be better for us than Defoe is, but at present Defoe is player well I'd rather he didn't drop in form at any point as I reckon a key part of Spurs doing as well as they can is that as many players as possible in the side keep doing as well as they can too. Could be wrong of course.

If Adebayor comes back into the side relatively soon at some point and we look even better for it I'm sure Adebayor will be first choice.

I'm pleased with Defoe though, think he did very well yesterday but Adebayor for me will improve us more overall IMO. Providing he's fit and motivated.

Wow some people on here are blind to Defoe's contribution.

a) His decision making was alittle poor in the latter stages but I think because he was on his last legs - he was absolutely knackered and who could blame him when he was pressing alone up front in second half running around after looooong punts.

b) Lazy? fuck me sideways. What did you expect him to do? Get hind the ball all the time? then who would we have had up front had we got on the break? How do you know it wasnt AVB that told him to just stay up?

c) Defoe's run for Bales goal did not mean he was getting into position expecting the pass. That movement has been worked on in training - just watch Defoes third against Reading for the reverse of this goal.

Just good to know that we can win games with Defoe up top on his lonesome. Last season I thought we would be absolutely fecked if Adebayor would have been out for a spell but full credit to AVB for making Defoe feel part of what is going on rather than a bench warmer. The result of this can only be positive for the rest of the season.

I'm pretty sure the decoy run Defoe done in that GIF is a coached tactic. I've never seen the team attack that way before and now we've done it twice in the last three games.

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks, ey?

However the hell AVB does for the rest of the season, he will always have my respect for turning Defoe into a player of...ahem...immense dimensions.

This! I've never seen it before either. Could it be an AVB tactic? It was a very slick move.
