Tottenham's Mousa Dembele is Europe's best box-to-box midfielder, according to the CIES Football Observatory's latest study.

The Belgian, who was recently banned for six games after a clash with Chelsea striker Diego Costa, has been in inspired form for Mauricio Pochettino's side this season.

Dembele has made 29 Premier League appearances this term and is regularly paired alongside Eric Dier in the centre of the park.

While the England international is charged with the sole task of sitting deep to shield the back four, Mauricio Pochettino also encourages Dembele to push forward and support attacks when an opportunity arises.
Statistics show Dembele fulfills the role better than any other player in Europe's top five leagues, with rigour, recovery, distribution, takes ons, chance creation and shooting all taken into account.

The position requires a player to be competent in all six categories and Dembele's performances were enough to see him claim top spot ahead of Paris Saint Germain's Blaise Matuidi.

Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan, whose career continues to be plagued by injury, secured third place while Dele Alli, who represents the youngest player included in the top 10, was adjudged to be worthy of fourth spot.

Juventus talisman Paul Pogba is further back in sixth place while Manchester City's Yaya Toure is the only other Premier League representative.

Dembele's ranking suggests Spurs will miss the 28-year-old's influence during hissuspension, which has ruled the midfielder out of the remainder of the season, plus the first four games of next term.

Tottenham struggled in Dembele's absence during Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Southampton, with Ryan Mason failing to fill the void left behind by the Belgian.

Spurs now face a battle to secure second spot ahead of Arsenal but travel to Newcastle on the final day of the season with the knowledge that one point will be enough to secure bragging rights in the capital, bar a huge swing in goal difference.

"Mousa Dembele
Tottenham’s 2015/16 league record when Dembele has started in central midfield:

Played 24; Won 15; Drawn 9; Lost 0. Points per game – 2.25

Tottenham’s 2015/16 league record when Dembele hasn’t started in central midfield:

Played 13; Won 4; Drawn 4; Lost 5. Points per game – 1.23

It’s all getting a bit silly now."

He's 28, injury problems, doesn't pass quickly or forward enough, doesn't score enough, blocking Tom Carroll and even Onomah and Edwards, maybe time to cash in, bla bla fkin bla

& don't forget he's a hothead too (new)

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon, @Bus-Conductor, but I can't help myself. As Dembele's discerning detractor (alliteration intended), and a veteran stat-man, what are your thoughts on Moussa's here? :)

Not surprised - absolutely immense footballer.

(I'd imagine he's the best 5 a side player ever to have graced this earth too.)

I'm a late convert to the Dembele bandwagon
and these stats are impressive.
Not that I am a stats man either.
But all the criticisms said in ironic fun by poster above are valid.
Taken him a long time to come good.
6 goals in 114 appearance over nearly 4 years
is not impressive for a box to box man.
And neither is one assist in nearly 30 Prem appearances this season.

But that's statistics for you.
I could get to quite like them.
First name on the teams sheet? No.
Important player for us? Yes.

Where's my wing-man BC when you need him!

even more ironic and fun is that no one whos watched and played thecgame would describe his role as box to box. that kind of midfielder died in the first division, when 442 was in vogue.

Still all talking points,eh, i like wasting time talking about football.

Dembele has indeed been very impressive this season, but I wouldn't call him box to box, he's more middle third dominator.

Doesn't quite score or create enough directly to trouble the opposiiton's goal, and can sometimes lack that true defensive nous and lose an oppo in our box. But in that middle third he dominates, gives cover to the defence and wins/holds on to the ball before giving it to a more creative/attacking player.

Yeah, just put him in a Torres or Costa Chelsea shirt for a day and that ban would be rescinded real quick along with a 2 page letter from Greg Dyke about why they were wrong to ban Dembele;)

Not box to box but I'm glad now his hip injury seems a thing of past he's had a great season and deservedly getting plaudits for it. One of my favourite players couldn't give two fucks whether he can't play a forward throughball his assets lay elsewhere and are just as important.

Incredible stats with and without dembele

Bad thing is he hasn't started in CM for 1 in 3 league games

We need a quality signing to play 1 in 3 in his absence
