How many times do we need to go through this:

1. He had plenty of chance to claim a first team place just didn't do it as well as Keane
2. Hes a good player
3. Didnt want to sign a new contract
4. Had to sell to avoid a "sol"
5. Didnt link up with Berbatov as well as Keane did

I wanted him to stay but not at the expense of one of our other strikers who look like they want to stay!

So we had two options - keep him until he walks away for zippo at the end of his contract, or sell him while we could and use that cash to fund improvements into our leaky defence. We made the right decision.

I wish him well, but he was intent on leaving on a "free" so gave us no option. Congrats to Levy for having the balls to do what he did.

I think there was quite a bit of potential there actually. He looked like he was improving more and more and just as keane got back in after injury we were starting to see glimpses of good understanding between them. He certainly looked more combatible with Berbs than Bent does.

Good player, perhaps not a brilliant one but it was as shame see him go. I doubt he'll give too much of a damn about leaving after Pompey have won the FA cup though eh?

Bent would score more goals given the chance, his Charlton record proves this. For me we were right to sell Defoe and the move has benefited everyone. Bent has now got 2 goals in 1 and a half games and I think if he started every game between now and the end of the season he would match if not better what Defoe does during the same period.

good riddance to him. He is pretty average, we were never going to build a team around him as he wasn't good enough for that and he suffered from the same ills that bent does for us - lack of service from midfield. Good right boot on him, not particularly quick, very lightweight, has one 'trick', offers nothing in the air. I think we can improve on Defoe myself and I think we don't need him. What we need is to improve our midfield creativity and our own strikers will score shedloads.

Will always stand by if you gave him 10 straight games he would outscore Keane.

But he didn't have the leadership Keane has

Defoe is Class and I was saying many times on these forums that I didn't want to see the guy leave. However, with that being said, the arrival of Bent and the fact that Berba and Keano were gelling so well together this season meant we had to cash in on him. Another simple fact is that scoring goals IS NOT one of our problems at the moment anyway

I'm happy JD is banging in the goals. He was a good player for us and I wish him every success for the future (although not against spurs ofc.)

I betted my mate that defoe will score more league goals than keano when he went to pompey keano was leading him by 7 or 8 goals defoe is now 2 behind, my bills is looking safe.
Back to the question I think we had to sale defoe where we want to be we need more and I think the problem with defoe is that he does,nt offer much in the air and he struggles to hold on to the ball when he receives the ball with his back to goal also he was,nt signing his contract extension I think we had no choice.
The next statement I make I think a lot of people are going to get upset I think we need to sale KEANO, right now we will get a good fee for him. To me keano is like defoe in the sense of that he,s lacking certain attributes weak in the air,and a lack of pace being the biggest. Unlike defoe he,s not really an out and out striker he,s like berbatov he,s natural game is to drop off but berbatov is beter. keano is not world class like (berbatov/rooney/torres/drogba/anelka/eto) dont get me wrong he,s alright. I feel we need a deadly world class striker to partner berby to go to the next level. The reason I would keep darren bent is he,s young and we spent a lot of money on him and to reoup that we need him to have a good season also I think he would accept being a squad player and comming off the bench better than keano. Other players I think need to go Robinson,Cerny,Dawson,Rocha,YPL,Taino and all the loan players except Ghaly.( Re:Ghaly its good to forgive and forget).

Defoe always does this at a new club, he signs, scores a shit load of goals early then relaxes and his desire goes. The same will happen at pompey, he'll hit a typical Defoe mid-season rutt and bottle it.

I'd prefer Keane and Berbie over him any day of the week, they're big game players, Defoe is not. Wait until he's put against the best teams under pressure and see how he does, Ramos was right to sell him.

Hi :) I'm afraid he will cos he'll be in the stands watching it - no medal for JD whoever wins the cup this season

and as I don't see pompey winning any more major trophies in the next 10 years (and they haven't won this one yet) it'll be potless time for JD I'm afraid at pompey

Wasn't there a quote from Berby a while back(last season I think) that he preferred playing with Defoe to Keane?

Nahh, it was more along the lines of that he'd developed a good understanding with Defoe prior to Keane returning.

There was a time a little before Xmas last year when Defoe & Berba looked very tasty together, but once Keane was back in the team, from about February onwards they really clicked.

We gave him pretty much that in the middle third of last season. He scored four goals—not poor, but hardly blinding either.
