Dyer in limbo as Spurs bid fails

SPURS have lost interest in Kieron Dyer after they failed to agree a player-exchange deal with Newcastle United for the England international.

This could mean the United midfielder finds himself in limbo at a time when a section of the fans would prefer him to leave St James’ Park.

The Chronicle revealed on Friday that Spurs had joined West Ham and Manchester City in the chase to sign Dyer who, according to boss Sam Allardyce, wants to leave for family reasons.

The two clubs have talked about a possible deal including a player-exchange.

A White Hart Lane source told me today: “Newcastle and Spurs have been talking about Dyer and the name of Didier Zokora has cropped up in a possible exchange deal.

“The word is that Spurs feel Newcastle value Dyer too highly at £8m and the deal is dead.”

Zokora was an £8.2m signing by Martin Jol from St Etienne 12 months ago and is an Allardyce sort of player.

It appears he will not be joining Big Sam because it does not look as though the deal will be resurrected, but if it was there would be another big problem – Dyer’s wages.

The 28-year-old picks up somewhere between £60,000 and £65,000 a week from United, while Spurs have a strict pay code with a ceiling of £35,000.

To complicate the situation, the talk in London is that United owner Mike Ashley does not want Dyer to go to Upton Park – even though Alan Curbishley has made a £4m bid.

Raise your hand if you think this is utter BS. :hello:

Comolli has bought zAkora twice. I doubt he's going to give him up at this point.

It appears that Spurs are willing to offload Zokora in part exchange deal that see's Dyer join Spurs. However both clubs are miles apart on their valuation of Dyer.

Personally I'm suprised Spurs would be happy to offload Zokora so soon.

Absolute Bollocks if you ask me.

I dont think this particular story is true, but we have been linked with defensive midfielders all summer, so I do think we are looking for someone in that area. I think Zokora has this coming season at the most to prove his worth, if he doesnt then he'll be gone.

Even to me, a serious Zokora basher, this deal doesn't make financial sense. How much will Dyer be worth in two years? Wih his injury record I'd say about zero. At least Zokora has a sell on value. Not suprisingly I'm all for selling Zokora, but it must be a deal that makes finacial sense for us. But I'm not even sure I'd sell him at the moment as we are short in terms of numbers in midfield. From the start of last season to the beginning on this we've have sold Davids and Ghaly and look to be selling Murphy. If we sold Zokora that would mean we've let 4 potential first team players go and only brought in a teenager (Taarabt) and probably a 20 year old (KPB). If anything I think we need to bring in another midfielder on top of the one's we have.

newcastle would bite our hands off if we offered zokora in exchange. Zokora must be worth 7-8m with his potential value increasing whereas dyer is valued at 5m with his value depreciating year on year

I don't have a problem in selling Zokora as long as we get at least the fee we paid (he is easily worth that much in todays market) and we don't sign Dyer.

I doubt it will increase as he's 26. That is why Levy will only pay decent fee's for player up to that age. In general after 26 a player can hold his value for a couple of seasons, but it is unlikely to go up, unless he plays at a very high level and attracts interest from clubs who can afford to not be so bothered about a sell on value. You say Zokora must be worth £7 or £8 million but who is going to pay it? Comolli is the only man who has paid decent money for him in the past. I doubt Pompey would be interested in another African and we aren't going to get a decent fee from abroad. Newcaslte might pay a decent fee for him. I think most managers form their lasting opinion of players from games which they played against them. Zokora had by far his best Prem game against Bolton, so I suspect Allardyce holds him in much higher regard than any other coach.

Would love to see him go. In fact it would be the best deal of the whole transfer window.

Unfortunately, I can't see it happening unless we have lined up another couple of midfielders in addition to KPB. I can but hope.

What a load of cobblers, there is no way we will get rid of Zokora - personally I am hopeful he will have a very good season now that he has a year in the premiership under his belt... The thought that we would get rid of him is ridiculous.

I like Zokora a lot, admittedly I expected more from him and still do. I put his 'reasonable' season down to adjusting to the league, but I want him doing more, putting in more solid tackles and doing less charging forward.

he should also never shoot.

That article has some bad inaccuracies which undermines its credentials. Zokora cost £5m, not £8.2m, and we don't have a wage ceiling of £35k. Bloody Geordie journo's!

Glad this annoys someone else! Defeats the point of the thread or we might as well just go and read these stories ourselves.
