From our local paper:

'Former Premier League star Simon Davies signs for local village team Solva - and will take his turn to wash the kit'

A FORMER Premier League star who earned tens of thousands pounds a week has signed for his local village team - and will have to pay £3 a week for the privilege of playing.

Simon Davies, the former Wales skipper, put pen to paper at Solva AFC’s home game on Saturday, having made a cameo appearance for the club during a friendly last summer.

The 34 year-old previously played for Peterborough United,Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Fulham and won 58 caps for Wales.

He captained Wales during their 2010 World Cup qualifiers before announcing his international retirement the following August.

The midfielder, worth around £4 million in his prime, will now have to pay £3 subs like everyone else on match day, and take his turn in washing the kit.

And rather than trips to Anfield to play Liverpool and Old Trafford to take on Manchester United, Simon will be facing the rather more low key journeys to Prendergast Villa and Milford Athletic.

Shame that this is the level he is down to at just 34 years old when there's older still playing at the top level.

Always really liked him and he was a decent player.

Bit of background to this.....there was a Football School of Excellence based in Haverfordwest that Simon Davies attended. There was a connection between HSoE with Norwich City through Kit Carson. KC then moved to Peterborough and thus HSoE talent was directed to Peterborough which is where Digger started his career. As a matter of interest my son was also recommended to Peterborough and I took him (and a couple of other useful lads) on two occasions. Unfortunately time and distance meant that nothing came of it, and on a general note, the Football Association of Wales decreed that all Wales qualified youngaters had to be associated only with Welsh clubs. I remember seeing Barry Fry at Peterborough training ground........his language was deplorable!

If only......the two saddest words in the world!

Simon Davies was probably my favourite Spurs player of the early 2000s (as well as Stephen Carr before that sulky final season and acrimonious transfer to Newcastle). Not an absolutely top-level superstar, but an extremely reliable pro who had a sprinkling of extra class over and above the rest of the cloggers we had in the team in those days. He's welcome back at the Lane any time in my book.
