Do the players really get it?

I'll leave the judging of mentality to Poch.

The squad have shown strong mentality in larger parts of the season than in the parts where we've seemed to freeze. I think people need to calm the fuck down. Even if this did hurt.

That is a fair weather mentality. Every time it has actually mattered this season the players have crumbled like old cheese.

Except at the Etihad, Anfield, Britannia, Fiorentina etc etc.....

It's the subjective interpretation of "actually mattered". There's no way that the game at the Etihad didn't matter....or rinsing United at home.....

It's so easy being an armchair internet commentator though, sport is like life - when things turn bad it almost feels like events are spinning out of your control. No football team wants to throw away a place in the league to their rivals, just like no-one wants to fail at anything in life, be it a business going under or a relationship ending.

I'm sure most of the players don't really understand what's gone on in the last four games at the moment. It'll take time, and Poch and his coaches will have to analyse and strategise to make sure lessons are learnt.

Ewwwwwwwwww.Commiserations, Mugged yourself right off.

I'd bathe in bleach after that tbf.

It was difficult, I took the bet when it was a two horse race for the title we came third!

My wife told me not to wear it home as she wouldn't let me in. Funny thing is I bought a new blue Spurs away shirt last week especially for my mate to wear today.

Today wasn't nowhere near good enough. It shows we are still learning and still have a lot to improve on. But overall with have to see the bigger picture. We are in the Champions League. We have to stay positive and be proud! We have to come next season with ambition! #COYS

On the one hand I respect his desire to put the negatives behind us and focus on the good reasons we have to be optimistic for the future...

On the other it feels like trivialisation of fans feelings, and justification for one of the most abject capitulations in (my) living memory.

Personally I think an unreserved apology with a firm commitment to never let it happen again today, followed by comments like those above once the dust has settled would've been more appropriate.

Thoughts?

Who said that?

If I was Poch I would collect every disparaging newspaper report and every piss take on social media he can find, put it in a dossier and send it to every player in the post. Show them that the football world is laughing at us and tell them this is what their lack of commitment at the end of the season means to the fans who make their millionaire lifestyle possible in the first place. Explain to them that if they want to be winners they can't ever slack off and it wont happen again under his watch or they can find another club and be losers there.

Then get Levy to calculate exactly how much lost revenue in prize money and spilt of CL money missing out on 2nd has resulted in. Tell the players it's being split and deducted from any bonuses they are getting.

If the first thing doesn't sink in I'm sure the second will (even though they'd probably just get their lawyers involved).

I suppose Pochettino always says that players don't sign a contract to play, they sign a contract to train.
I guess the players took it to heart in a bit to literal way.

Read an interesting take on this in The Mirror today (Dave Kidd). Gist of it was that Spurs dropped off once the title was gone, probably shows a full commitment to winning the league and a massive come down when this was unachievable. Expected for a young team. legends? No.

Arsenal on the other hand, Top at Christmas proceeded to fall apart until the title was gone for them, then picked up when the pressure was off. legends? Yes!

His conclusion, Spurs more likely of the two to challenge next season.

That's my take in it as well. We were disappointing against West Brom, but Chelsea had to play their best game of the year to get a point against us. Southampton and Newcastle were the only games where the mentality and commitment had gone.

I would argue the mentality wasn't right in the Chelsea game either, for different reasons.

As I've said before, in the Chelsea game we lost our heads and then after that unfortunately we lost our hearts.

Maybe, I have no doubt Kane is hurting, not sure about all of them though.

I doubt Lamela takes to kindly to shit like that either and nor would possible Rose had he played......... To be honest any player professional or not who doesn't get pissed at a performance like that, imo shouldn't be playing the sport.

That is a fair point. It could be argued however, that as the end of the season got nearer, added to the fact that we were expected to beat WBA and Newcastle, and could have been forgiven for losing to city et al, then we did not deal with expectation and pressure well.

Plus, losing 5-1 to Newcastle isn't a stumble, or an unlucky result. It was a capitulation of the highest order.

Rose? He's been one of our best players the last couple of seasons. Very consistent and fights like a motherfucker. Best LB in the league right now.

Eriksen's our highest assister (is that a word). He switches off but he has great vision and has contributed enough.

Verts is a strange one. We didn't miss him at all when he was out, but I still think he's as good as we'll get as a partner for Toby. The 2 enjoy each other's company.

Walker is very limited and I'd have no problems selling him. Son I'd keep too just to see if he settles in his 2nd season. Our foreign signings tend to have a shit 1st year.

This.

Walker I'm in two minds about, he can be quite good but I do wonder if Trippier would be better served in our system given he is better at crossing (and sometimes even scoring!).

With Walker-Peters as back up.

Could get some decent dosh for Walker that can be re-invested.

The Chelsea game wasn't about a lack of bottle though. That one was down to inexperience and wanting to right some wrongs. You could see during the wba game that the heads were starting to go and we were starting to get feisty and petulant.
