I think you have answered your own question. We play a one striker system, Kane is our talisman and the first name on the team sheet. He will always start. Why spend £60m and huge wages on Lacazette, who would at best rotate with Kane? He's not going to be happy being number two. It's a huge outlay on a player that would only improve depth.

Lacazette isn't going to cost 60m, I think more like 40-45 gbp, max and if you'd read my original post you'd know that he not only would he be able to play as striker but he can also play as a wide striker and AM, he's better than Son for example in either role. He's a hard worker and tenacious without the ball too.

This was from the summer, pretty sure Aulas also said he would cost more than €50m (£45m):

Arsenal transfer news: Alexandre Lacazette will cost £60 million as Lyon look to keep striker

Farfan, Berbatov, Adebayor, Ronaldinho, Caceres, Meireles, Essien, Muntari, Jo, Drenthe, Alex, Bosingwa, Kuranyi all available on free transfers.

Any of them worth a punt in January? Plenty of experience, pay as you play deals, throw them into the FA Cup or Europa if we get knocked out of the CL. Redknapp would wet his knickers over this lot! Lol

Very strange that we have not picked up any players on free transfers the last couple of years. But 30M for Sissoko? "Yes please, can I do the pay for two and take one offer?" :banghead:

The problem with all those names are that they are either players we don't need or players that are past it that aren't likely to train and play the way Poch would like.

The way that we throw away the cups every year, I wouldn't mind seeing a bunch of misfits with Ronaldinho at the helm come January. If we are going to go out it may as well be entertaining, plus I can get a Spurs shirt with Ronaldinho on it! Hell we might even score a goal from open play!

Were his wage demands not prohibitive, @Bus-Conductor ?

He's only on about €75/£66k pw now I think?

And @THFCSPURS19
As far as I know - and this may have changed - he hasn't signed a new deal since the extension he signed in the summer of 2015 which takes him to 2019, which means - if true and he didn't sign the extension offered last summer - that Aulas knows next summer is the last chance saloon because after next summer he enters the 2 year death of contract zone, which sees his value plummet.

What Aulas says and the reality are often not the same thing. I'm not saying that he may not get an over inflated price for Lacazette, we all know how mental the market has become (nowhere is there better evidence of this than us paying the ludicrous 30m GBP for Sissoko) but unless he signs a new contract which includes the higher buy out clause that Aulas wanted, I can't see him moving for the 70m Aulas is talking about, unless Cavani gets injured and/or PSG get utterly desperate - which I can see happening.

I reckon if Arsenal had offered 45m he'd be a gooner now because, by all accounts, he wanted to go and hadn't signed the extension. I just think after watching the inferior Batshuayi go for 33m, Aulas was never going to let Lacazette go for 35m.

I don't believe Sullivan (or was it Gold's) spin that it was only wages that stopped them getting him, I reckon Lacazette turned his nose up at them and this was just a face saving exercise.

To say we failed to improve in the summer is ludicrous. Wanyama clearly offers more than Mason and Bentaleb did, Nkoudou already looks miles better than Njie and Janssen is easily better than nobody at all. We got lucky with Kane's fitness last season, but thank fuck we had someone to hold the ball up and graft while Kane was out recently. I'm willing to give Sissoko time but yes, I do currently question why we'd sacrifice Chadli for him. Our other transfers though, all improved our squad compared to those who left.

Where we've fallen short is failing to improve our first xi/ sign genuine competition for it. Wanyama for Dier perhaps but in the job they do, there's little tangible to separate them. Going forward Janssen and Nkoudou I suspect won't really push their respective competitors till next season, while Sissoko is thus far managing to be less productive than Lamela. Ergo, come January if we are near enough to top spot and / or hopefully still in the champions league, we really need to bring in an attacker who will genuinely improve us. Isco is a lovely glamorous option, but I'd like to see us try for Mata or Payet. Both are likely to want out of their clubs for differing reasons, both would bring that flair and style our attack seems devoid of, both are very much in their prime.

We are slightly different because Lacazette could not only be seen as as good as Kane as a striker, he could also be seen as an upgrade on players like Son and Lamela as wide forwards/AM, but At Bayern he wouldn't necessarily be seen as an upgrade on any of their front players.

I've never seen Lacazette play as, nor really be talked about as anything other than a main striker. I'm not a massive fan of playing strikers in AM or wing slots. They're often too selfish and stay or stray too centrally to make it work.

I also think you have to look at his age and the fact he has not even looked close to leaving Lyon yet. Some players just get chronically overrated either because they score a lot (Darren Bent) or because they're a highlight player (Shaquiri). For the huge fee and wages, nobody is interested and I think that is because the top scouts just don't think he's good enough to be worth paying anywhere near what he's demanding.

Also, those wanting us to buy Payet, look at him this season. He is back to the old Payet ways, the reason he was available for £10m and has never moved to a big club or commanded a big transfer fee in his entire career. When everything is peachy and he can be arsed he is a great player, when he isn't he may as well not be there.

Maybe. He became a big star after a great season in the Prem and in the Euros. He now has the humiliation of remaining a West Ham player. Enough to distress any human being.
