Croatia coach Slaven Bilic has backed Newcastle United's bid to sign midfielder Luka Modric.

The exciting Dinamo Zagreb starlet is likely to move to a bigger club in the near future and Bilic is keen that it happens sooner rather than later.

The former West Ham and Everton defender has spoken highly of Kevin Keegan's Magpies and believes they could provide the perfect platform for the 22-year-old if a reported £12 million move goes through.

"As for Luka, Newcastle United are no doubt a big club - just behind the top five. Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton.
"NUFC are in the range of Chelsea, Leeds United and Aston Villa but can invest a lot more money in new signings than let's say Tottenham.
"Also it's more likely that Newcastle will be English champions than Tottenham.
"Luka wouldn't be making a mistake if he signs for The Magpies."

Probably agree yea, I know Newcastle don't boast a history but they have a massive following and do have plenty of backing.

Leeds Utd?! that just enhances the stupidity of that comment

I know Leeds have had a bit of a fall from grace, but they have a huge following across the whole of Yorkshire, they do have a history & I would put them in that bracket.

I'm assuming he's talking historically...Chelsea haven't historically been a big club. Does still seem an odd quote though.

From a stature point of view, in historical terms it is not far wrong. In terms of Newcastle being able to offer more money (in terms of wages) it is true. In terms of them being more likely to win the Premier League than us I am doubtful, but they have certainly got a lot closer than us in the past.

Not completely crazy.

Do the Geordies really have a big following though? I dont know anyone that supports Newcastle that isnt from Newcastle or lives in Newcastle?!

Also why do they have more chance of winning the premier league than spurs.

A load of bullshit thats what this is.

Yea they do, massive following in the North, even across Cumbria way.

I was even in Rugby last month watching Birmingham vs Newcastle & it was full of Toon fans.

I agreed for a while, until he got to the bit about Newcastle being more likely to win the PL than us. Newcastle won't win shit under Keegan, just like last time.

Major coup
Croatia coach Slaven Bilić added: "Tottenham are definitely one of the clubs that would suit Luka Modrić the most. I would say that maybe it is the ideal choice for him. Tottenham are a big club, they want to make a step forward and Luka will fit in very quickly." The transfer is a major coup for Tottenham, who have beaten off interest from a host of clubs, including Newcastle United FC, for his signature. Tottenham, who are eleventh in the Premier League, will play in the UEFA Cup next season after winning the English League Cup in February.
