I've realised that I completely discount Chelsea and Man City games. Of course I hope we can get some sort of results against them but I don't get upset or annoyed when we lose.
Frankly, as far as I'm concerned it's like playing a Football Manager tournament where one player has got cheat codes. Any victories and trophies they win are, in my mind, meaningless.
Any Chelsea fan who tries to get uppity, I just tell him that Barnet would have won the CL if someone had given then £1bn.
I know all other clubs spend money, but it's money they have earned and need to be accountable. If they gamble on a big signing, it's a calculated gamble, not just spending someone else's money.

I discount them. I put an imagerary asterix after their respective names (and trophies won) to indicate that they are a 'doped' club. It also winds up Chelsea fans I know. I don't engage with them on football matters the same way I would with an Arsenal or Man United fan. I just kind of view them different. That's the reason last year I wanted Manc City or Chelsea to win the league over Liverpool. Liverpool are a proper club and and not 'new money'. Liverpool are big as they have built themselves through a prolonged period of success. Man City...less so.

It is also why we should not be overly critical of our own acheivement. If Chelsea and City hadn't been doped we would be a Champions League regular along with Arsenal, Man United and Liverpool.

I know people alsways doubt the following statement but:

I wouldn't swap places with either Chelsea or Man City for their bought success. As strange as it seems the club I respect and am jealous of is actually Arsenal. They are the blueprint we should be aspiring too; sustainable and sensible management.

I know. It does pain me to admit. I'm not sure where to turn or who to talk to about it. I need help. Sometimes I just cry for days. :(

It depends on the team. I wasn't expecting any thing last night, but with bale, modric and that lot I thought we could do them.

I'm just glad we have another game so soon this weekend. That is where we really know if the team is getting back on track.

They are in every respect a model off the pitch. But are the biggest waste of potential of any club in the Premier League.

With there revenue streams they should be up there with Chelsea and City.

I said the exact same thing to my mates last night. I usually get upset when we lose but when its to Chelsea and Man City it kinda feels meh. As you say, whats the point in trying to compete with somebody who has been doped. Its a sad state of affairs really but there you go, I just hope im around when the time comes for Roman and the Sheik to get bored and leave them teetering on the edge of going out of business, that will be almost as sweet as us winning the bloody league.

Whenever a Chelsea or city fan try to wind me up, I just shrug and say whats the point in your club anymore? it winds them up a treat.

Away maybe, but at home we should be able to beat anyone in my book.

My book may be classed as 'fictional' at this moment in time.

The indifference really does wind them up. I also know a few longtime City and Chelsea fans that have given up on their clubs. Lost interest. As you say..even some of their own fans begin to ask 'what is the point?'.

Yeah. I don't want to lose to them, but it's consolation to remember that you could only compete with them over 38 games if you spend several hundred million pounds.

And if you do that, where's the skill? It's just a case of auctioning the league trophy, he who spends more, gets it. So why even bother joining the race? Where would the satisfaction be?

Better to do it in the 'traditional' sense and try to overcome the odds.

Nope I don't discount them, that is a defeatist attitude basically giving up before the game starts. If we want to be a top club playing in the CL, we can't have that attitude.

Personally I always look at the performance rather than the result when we play Chelsea and Man City.

I do discount these games... have always done so for the Old Trafford game as well up until a few years ago. Not since it became our new away training ground of course. No point getting worked up about them imo.

You are a disgrace to the family. You could have come out as a a Hermpahodite Transexual politician or something, just not this..

Its like that Billy Connolly joke; a man was found dead on the banks of the Clyde, dressed in stockings and suspenders. He was originally found wearing a Rangers shirt, but his brothers quickly went down and changed his clothes so as not to embarrass the family.

I discount Oil Money (formerly known as Man City), as I don't consider them to be a football club at all. The analogy I've used in the past is turning up at a children's go-karting race in your F1 car. If you don't win it's a massive failure. If you do win it means absolutely nothing and is still embarrassing.

Chelsea is a bit different because of the rivalry between us, but we're certainly not playing on an even playing field. You can guarantee that if the situation was reversed their knuckle-dragging fans wouldn't acknowledge any defeats to us.

I see where you're coming from but we can't afford to think that way. The demoralising effect of taking a hiding from these two cannot be underestimated, especially with the media ratcheting up the pressure on us whenever we do.

It's not defeatist - it's just drawing a line between worthy and unworthy opponents. You still want to beat everybody but fundamentally they're cheats, so to lose against them is not the same as losing to a proper club.

It's no different to a situation where you lose a match because of a heinous referring decision. You want to win the game and its important, but you wouldn't react to the defeat the same you would if you were genuinely beaten.

Could not agree more, the day we go down that route will be the end for me.
