True enough

Our recent big-money spends (£10m+) have usually turned out well; Modric, Berbatov, VDV, Bale, Lloris, Verts, Demeble (could also add in Keane, Defoe and Kaboul - they all played their part).

Eriksen, Lamela, Paulinho and Soldado look good too, although we'll judge them after a season.

Only notable flops are Bentley and to a greater or lesser extent, Pavlyuchenko

Bent was in the end.

We've had a number of flops though, but we havem't really dined that the top table on transfers consistently in terms of fee. VDV was actually a bargain at £8m wasn't he?

I'd say Gomes was a huge flop for a goalkeeper, £8m was a lot for a keeper.

Damn, I forgot Bent - bit of a shocker, as you say

Arshavin.

Actually I think Arshavin was good for Arsenal. He did enough in his first season or two to warrant him being bought, even if he was awful after that. I think he could have done well for us, might have been good with Pav

Bent wasn't really a flop though. Scored enough goals to justify his wages and we got our money back when selling (with sell on fee).

I wish we signed him, I think he had been exactly what we needed as our team then lacked character or belief because despite what we have now I still think that was our best first 11 ever in the PL.

A lot of these players made wrong career choices, doesnt necessarily mean they would be a flop here. Arshavin for me would of been a success with us and for me would of made that team in that horrific Ramos start perform.

As for Willian you are saying a bullet dodged, he is in a team where the likes of Oscar, Mata, Hazard, Schurrle and De Bruyne are looking poor

Ade after he officially signed has been dire. Before his two goals last week, a huge number was asking for Siggy to be shipped out...

We at least got our money back for Bent, but yeah, he was never a player that was going to suit us.

Gomes has the ability of a 8m GK but mentally he seems f**cked. One thing goes aganist him and he looks like a amature GK.

Willian is probably a great player but I do not believe he is better than what Chelsea already had so cannot see him getting a look in so we can fool ourselves that he was a bullet dodged. Personally I prefer that we signed Eriksen instead cheaper and looks to have a good footballing brain which is important for a player who is expected to pull the strings.

Leandro Damiao.

On the other hand I was very much on the "F**K NO!" side of the proposed 'Bale + money for Downing' exchange which would have made the Spurs we know today look like one of those dystopian futures where the Nazis had won the war.
Love this. :)
