While watching the scum game tonight  one of the commentators said that at the Carling Cup when 'arry asked for penalty volunteers not 1 hand went up:eek:mg:

Does anyone if this is true or any further details?

Apparently Jamie O' volunteered, and Modric and Bent would have taken one no probs but were being saved for 4th and 5th. Shame they never got to them...

Luka still isn't over his Euro 2008 miss and said he didn't want to take one, which while disappointing, I can understand.

i can't - the only way he will get over it is by taking another pen ad scoring

AN obvious lie because as we know Jamie O'Hara not only volunteered but volunteeredto go first

You genuinely can't understand why he wouldn't want to take another less than a year after his kick played a part in Croatia going out of the Euros? :?

He didn't say he'll never take a penalty again; just that he doesn't feel he's ready yet.

Just shows that there are not enough leaders in the squad. Obviously Keane would put his hand up, Defoe too, and probably Pav. I cannot for the life of understand why Bent was being "saved" for 4th or 5th. Madness.

I agree with the ones who say that the only way to get over a penalty miss is to go on and take the next possible one...

Martin Palermo extract from wikipedia:

He is featured in the Guiness Book of World Records for missing three penalties for Argentina in a single international match against Colombia for the Copa América 1999. The first penalty rebounded off the crossbar, whilst the second went over, causing TV commentators to remark, "Even higher than the first one." Though the third was on target it was saved.

Yep saving ppl for the 4th and 5th penalty is stupid, put the best ones first. By missign the first penalty we really fcked ourselves mentally, especially against a team like man u

Totti saved his penalty for the 5th one and surely he would be their penalty taker (his penalty was the best)
I think this all should be pre-arranged, there should be a list of 10 players and the takers are in that order, if one of them is subbed or injured just go down to number 6 and so on. We dont get a penalty during normal time and then decides who takes it, its pre-determined unless we are 2or 3 up.
If Modric doesn't want to take one fair enough, we didn't buy him for his penalty shootout ability, if he missed another one and put us out it would have fucked him up proper.

My only rule regarding penalty takers-- No lefty's I am never confident when one takes one, I thought Riise would miss his and then the dude who missed the last one was a lefty as well. I would like to see a stat regarding left to right footed penalty misses.

Hopefully there are some at the training ground. Although, if not, it would explain why whenever we get a corner it's like the taker has never even been introduced to a football before.

I usually hate short corners but im really liking the Lennon Moric corner combo, so much better than the shite we usually come up with.

It's been touched on, but I also disagree. My ideal line up would be:

1) Mentally tough player
2) 2nd best
3) Confident player
4) best pen' taker
5) Mentally tough player

There's nothing worse in the shoot out when you've done your first 3 or 4 thens, are still on level terms, and all of your players with any sort of penalty talent have taken one.

I think the mentally strong players, the ones who can largely block the moment out... they're one ones who should get the ball rolling and take that potentially massive 5th one. The 2 best takers plus someone who's genuinely confident should take the middle 3 in my opinion.

If my theory had been applied in the CC final, our takers who probably have been:

1) Corluka
2) Modric
3) O'Hara
4) Bent
5) Assou-Ekotto

I know the BAE 5th one looks dodgy, but I genuinely would have been relatively confident with him taking one. He's not a big football fan and isn't a Spurs fan - it's human nature that there would have been less pressure on him taking a massive kick like the 5th than say, O'Hara. He's also one of the best at the club when it comes to technical ability.

I just dont think we have many players who can really strike the ball, which is why there was a lack of confidence to take a penalty. Take our first choice midfield for example. Our 2 most attacking midfielders are Modric and Lennon. Neither of whom have a great shot on them.

And i'm sure Defoe, Keane and Pavyluchenko would have stepped up if they were available. I'd also say that Palacios is the type of character to step up and take one. But i'm sure if they'd all practised penalties then there would have been more confidence.

Bent was definitely taking one. Has someone already said - Totti was Roma's 5th.

I agee Chris, sometimes BAE looks cold and expressionless. He raely looks anything other than chilled as fuck. I reckon he'd have slotted one away.

how bad was Vucinic's pen?! it bounced twice & Almunia was already laying on the floor when he kicked it away!!
imagine one of ours tried that, he'd never be forgiven!

The commentator said something like: “When Harry Redknapp asked who wanted to take a penalty no one put their hand up”. I can’t see that being bullshit. Maybe after a short while O’Hara said something like, “Oh go on, I’ll go first”.

Which is disappointing, very disappointing. Lack of confidence, no real leader. I was very disappointed with Bent. Being our #1 striker on the pitch you’d have hoped he’d be the first to step up to the plate to bang one in. It surely only highlights our players lack of confidence. You can understand a defender or a defensive type midfielder who rarely shoots not to want to volunteer for the sake of us winning.

Your BEST penalty taker should go first or at least one of your strikers (whose job it is to score in open play anyway) should. Those who score in training day in day out and are trained to do so. It makes sense.

Quite possibly the worst penalty I've seen, even Almunia seemed almost apologetic that he had to save it.

If that had been JJ, there would be a million threads calling him a ****, with DC Boy still praising him in every single one.
