Never thought he was much cop, and after watching him for England tonight please don't anyone say we need to sign him, particularly for the money muted.

He's not that good and certainly will not improve our team.

Oh
Oooh yeah
Ah
Ziggy played guitar, jamming good with weird and gilly
And the spiders from Mars. He played it left hand
But made it too far
Became the special man, then we were Ziggy's band.

And vaguely on topic, based on tonight's (and the past two or three years') performances, would you want any of the England team for Spurs?

I thought he started well but was poorly supported by Cole. Cole's final ball was attrocious and he was always breaking beyond Downing forcing D inside. Downing's been playing very well for Boro recently and starting to look like he's worth a punt. I like him.

Downing played very well tonight for my money, as he has done all season

He won't be a target for us as he's been Middlesbrough's 2nd top scorer, top assist-maker and has signed a new contract. And before he signed a new contract we baulked at the asking price.

He is an underrated player.

Can't understand why people suck off bentley and young, when downing performs more consistently every single week.

So piss taking aside, do you see anything that makes you think this guy has what it takes to make us a better team ?

Every transfer window he's always mentioned as being a target, I just don't see a player that will help us, tonight confirmed that for me.

Indeed Kendall, Downing has always seemed to me to be pretty much a left-footed Bentley, not much significant difference in quality whatsoever. I'd far rather sign Downing considering we already have Lennon (though I don't see it as realistic so we should look elsewhere for a left-winger)

OK maybe I should make my positiom clearer as a LW let's compare him to say Ginola I would say FFS sign him but Downing to me is average to say the least.

Try watching him for Boro, in Real Football Land. Internationals (especially Mickey Mouse friendlies) are absolutely the worst games to judge a player, unless you're labouring under the delusion that they represent the pinnacle of football.

No way should we pay the crazy price Boro were supposedly demanding, and now he's signed a new contract it's probably all academic anyway. But he's a player Ramos could have done a lot with.

Sorry but I disagree he just doesn't have that STAR QUALITY to be a Tottenham player to me.

But hey that's what football is all about.. opinions

yea, every single week.

he is at the root of every boro attack, his crosses are exceptional, his turn of pace is brilliant & his link-up play is fantastic.

ok so I don't see him for Boro every week but tonight and every time I've seen him, he looks aevearge to me.

Again I compare him to Ginola who as a LW made me cum with his LW play or say Waddle, both true artistes of that position. Sorry but Downing does not excite me.

Well, he's no Ginola or Jones, that's for sure. But on the plus side he whacks in a lot of very decent crosses (last season, more than Giggsy and Ronaldo combined), takes a useful set piece, can, contrary to popular opinion, beat his man, and knocks in his share of goals. He's also only 23.

As I say, it's probably all academic now, but we could do a great deal worse. And don't forget that Woody's form for Boro was pretty ho-hum. It's amazing the difference playing for a real manager can make.

you can't compare him to ginola or waddle as they were totally different. it's like comparing lennon to beckham.

Downing played well tonight & put in some great crosses, which he was expected to do, he alsp made their RB look like a tit on a few occasions only to be let down by cole. he also played some wicked balls inside only for the midfield to fuck it up.

He is a very well equipped, intelligent player.

ginola was a selfish fucker, we loved him because he was the only decent player we had at the time, but he was like Taarabt, played with his head down & with an ego.

OK SS57 we will never know prolly how he would perfom under Ramos but (and this is what a forum is for) i really don't think he is that good.

My opinion

For me a Tottenham LW should be about beating the defender, whipping in the cross accurately and getting the crowd excited. what a shame Ginola isn't available now.

Downing, if we ever got him, would be a 2nd rate signing for all his statistics

RW should be too but we have Lennon there

Downing is second rate. Who else have Englang got who can play wide left and is left footed. In squad as we have no one else
