If not Laporte, he would be a very very good alternative and I’m assuming he would be vastly cheaper.

Don't know about cheaper, but maybe more gettable. He'd see us as a step up, while Laporte we're all unsure whether he'd take the step down.

(Provided we don't want to win any headers)

Romero ranked in the top 95th percentile for Aerial Win % in the top 5 leagues with 71.8% in 22/23.

Tapsoba ranks in the bottom 34th percentile with 57.9% for 22/23 but what I would say is all of Leverkusen's CBs stats for aerials are poor so it could well be something systemic rather than an individual issue. If you look at his aerial stats for 21/22 in Bundesliga for example, Tapsoba had a 72.4% Aerial Win % which put him in the top 90th percentile.

Problem is that he's in the "bottom half" of centre backs for winning aerial duels - and whilst in isolation not the end of the world, it's not a Romero strength either.

But if Ange doesn't like CBs heading the ball then we're all good.
Easiest way to avoid aerial duels is to play high up the pitch and not invite crosses. Having a centre back that allows us to play that way should be the priority, even if they aren’t perfect.

Would he qualify for a work permit, post brexit?

New rules mean premier league clubs can sign 4 players who don't meet points requirement for work permits

Where does he play in the back 3 for Levekeusen?
In a back 4, he plays as a LCB

In a back 3, he also plays on the left and right.

It says more about league than players. PL have many clubs who go direct which means lot of % aerial duels can be won easily given most times accuracy isn’t right. I bet most of Tapsoba faced is aerials from corners & free kicks

I know that being a left footed LCB is really helpful due to the way it can open up passing angles etc, but is it even that common that it causes that much of an issue. I’m thinking back through various CB partnerships and some of the very best have had pairings who are both right footed.

Is it that big a deal in reality?

It's not a huge deal but imo it is preferable to play on your 'stronger' side. Right footed players usually prefer to tackle with their right foot. Being on the 'wrong' side then means you're tackling from a much less favourable angle in many circumstances. Maybe Tapsoba has adjusted to this, or it's not an issue for him.

I wouldn't go for a worse defender just to get a left footed though.
It worked well for Ledley King and John Terry, Kim Min-jae many want he does the same right foot on left of a duo.

I was a right footed LCB. I was anyways fine players going down my left flank and dealing with them with my left foot. If they cut inside, where the danger is actually greater, they were on my dominant side.

The only thing I think it really impacts is moving the ball across the back four. It can close off the pitch of a lcb is relying on his right foot to ping balls.

It's vastly overrated unless in a back 3.
