Yeah, so much respect for selling club when West Ham offered 20m for Maguire when United wants 40m or when first offer for Diaby from Aston Villa was 30m and final agreed price was ~50m
We respect the selling club so much we don’t even bid.
We monitor and flirt.

£50m is not expensive for a top defender. Liverpool spent £75m on VVD five years ago. Even £70m or whatever now would be worth it if it fixes our defence.

Our defence is pathetically bad. It's been an emergency for at least three years now. We shipped a relegation-level number of goals last season.

We're in the diabolical position where we have ONE centre back who's good enough. Dier, Davies, Sanchez and Tanganga should all have been moved on over the last few years. It's astonishing how badly we've neglected this area.

If Tapsoba is the no.1 target then I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the club to do everything to get it done now.

The trouble is Levy generally only likes doing deals when he can "win", where the player can be had for less than their market value or where there's an opportunity to capitalise on the position of the seller.

When we get to signings that the seller doesn't want to lose and we potentially need to pay a bit over the odds for, that's when we get the weeks of haggling before it falls through.

And then we get a cheapo option who's not good enough and is another player on the books for five years who we'll fail to shift and will stop us signing a good player. Rinse and repeat.

We’re simply waiting for them to get desperate on deadline day, it’s a solid plan that’s proven to work very well.

We clearly aren’t getting him. They won’t drop their price and we won’t pay it.
He was the game changer imo for our defence and the perfect partner to Romero. Just saddens me we can’t even sign a 50m euros cb who’s 24. We aren’t asking levy to go sign gvardiol

Maybe Lewis could make the shortfall up with some insider info delivered to the Leverkusen chairman to get it over the line?

Who has said he is only going to cost £50m?

A few pages ago there were reports of £50m. Obviously I have no idea how much he will cost but whatever it is, it'll be worth it if it fixes our defence.

There were reports of ‘in excess of £50m’
My post also said that if it were £70m or whatever then that would still be worth it if he's our top target.

Again, for the record, I didn't say he will cost £50m

cabinessence: Bit of Rock Solid. Was going to be one of the two CHs we've been linked with and a cheaper one as well. Now waiting for Harry to go and maybe buy both CHs and a younger reserve striker. Like it or not, Rich appears to be our new No. 9

Not unexpected - but frustrating that we didn't move quickly to bring in one of them early if the intent was always there. I presume that indicates Tapsoba was first choice, the Van Der Ven deal moved much more smoothly, and now we're waiting to see if both can be secured as Tapsoba is still the first choice?

This was obvious from the moment all CB talk ground to a halt. Of course, Plan A might be impossible by the time Harry’s saga is over.

Agree not surprising. Would feel more palatable if it meant that it guaranteed both. Have to admit I’d be really underwhelmed if we got the Kane windfall and signed just one CB and a young backup 9.

Even with that info, I don’t really understand why we haven’t pulled the trigger on one already … as many have said.

Only reason I can think of is not knowing how much we would have up front from H cash.
