the trouble is that the manner in which the English enjoy themselves is very distasteful & offensive to many Europeans. It plays on your British high street but it doesn't on your European sidewalk

Most people, even on this site, appear to have no idea quite how offensive continental Europeans find what we'd consider 'normal behavior' ... & then become nonplused & taken aback at the response earned

Yeah that's a fair point. Personally I tend to be quite relaxed and comfortably reserved in other countries. I don't have the overwhelming urge to rip off my shirt and start yelling at the top of my voice, or just generally start being obnoxious.

Maybe it's to do with being islanders. We don't really consider Europeans to be our neighbours, but random cultures that we feel a bit distanced to (thanks to an education that largely looks down on other countries). We're also horrible in groups. One or two English tourists will be fine, but it does seem as though any big group descends into ape-like behaviour.

There's plenty of wankers in England. However, I think that overall things have improved as far as football supporters go (certainly compared to the 80s). Unfortunately there are enough pricks that still manage to get tickets to stir up all the historical clichés about England fans, and the majority end up suffering for it.

Yeah, I thought it was a neutral stand. Most of the ground was English wasn't it?
I don't know if this was the case but apparently some england fans brought tickets for the russia end using the russian uefa portal

The russian hooligans are probably rich upper-class too. I don`t think russians with ordinary russian salaries can afford a boozy trip to Marseille..?

I thought someone said that there were a lot of Russian people living in the area?

WTF were FIFA doing giving Russia the WC. Yeah I know massive bribes but I fear for fans travelling there in 2022. And Uefa giving official accreditation to a known neo nazi. :banghead:

Agreed. I'd put a lot of Aussies abroad in that category Aswell.

I don't see anything terrible about fans fighting. Quite the opposite, the guys did well. Keep it up!" - Igor Lebedev, member of Russian Football Union

"A normal man, as he should be, surprises them, They're used to seeing 'men' at gay parades," - Head of media liaisons for the Russian Federation Investigative Committee

Enjoy the Russian World Cup everyone.

2022??
You mean 2018!!

I have no idea what Russia are playing at the moment, it's like they deliberately want to be seen as rattling the sabre on all fronts.

Yes, something I experienced 16-17 years ago when I stayed 3 months in Bali, Indonesia. The aussies weren`t excactly popular among the locals there I remember.

I'd actually go as far as English speaking countries having seen Kiwi's and Canadian's on the sauce!

I actually almost miss the old Soviet Union. It seemed like Russia was a more well-functioning and fair country back then. Russia today appears as a totally corrupt country mixed with fascist and middle age values.

But, I don`t think Putin will accept any voilence in the WC 2018. In contrast to western democratic countries, he probably won`t hesitate using the army as security guards. My guess is that the streets in Russia will be quite secured during WC 2018.

Nah, wasn't pleasant but there were enough good memories of the trip to more than counteract it.

Not sure I'm gonna do the World Cup in Russia though

I'd rather sit through the Newcastle last day of the season game ten times than go to a World Cup in Russia!

Lots of them are apparently in the police/army.

Also the french seem to be moving now deporting people

https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...ia-fans-euro-2016-violence-alexander-shprygin

I love how this statement basically says that the other 48 people were up to no good!

"He said those who had left the bus had been informed they were being deported: “They’re deporting two women who had nothing to do with anything. We’ve called the consul and are refusing to get out of the bus.” The Russian consul subsequently arrived on the scene and, Shprygin added, the mayor of Cannes was in attendance to observe the operation."

Wonder what the outcome today will be... Does anyone think UEFA might dock them points? They were threatened with that after 2012 incidents in Poland/Ukraine.

I suspect nothing more than a large fine though.
Think Russia should be given a points deduction personally, though in all honesty most of the groups aren't fussed about the football, it's about showing who to fear, who the new bosses of the football underground are.

However the Russian FA might care enough to make more of an effort going forward if UEFA get tough.

Not against England being warned either, though I do think French policing and UEFA match venue policies are partially to blame.

I think England should seriously consider pulling out of the tournament: the fans aren't safe; the Russians are thugs; the French authorities have no plan - why let people drink from glass bottles!

Unfortunately a minority of English fans can not behave. Furthermore, the English are a target / magnet for international hooligans. This is compramising the ability of the Fench police to deal with possible terrorism threats. Either we should pull out or they need to Impose alcohol bans.

I'd be surprised if there is no trouble on Wednesday / Thursday. Then we will get kicked out and banned even if the Russians instigate the violence.
