also the portugal national team have been trying to get him playing for them as he qualifies but he said he wanted to play for england. If he is that rubbish then why did they want him to play for the national team so much.
It may be a case of get him in now to secure him in the future

The Diego Costa fiasco has meant international teams will fight hard to give players who aren't ready for the national team just so that they don't lose him at a later age

France were willing to call up Bentaleb for the same reason, england wanted him and Januzaj to wait 2 years :ROFLMAO:

I don't know if this has been mentioned(it has been in another thread by a couple of us including @S.Mouse!)

That Dier has a rare ability for a CB, in that he is a good free kick taker that places instead of smashing it(rare for CB free kick takers)

Though this one didnt go in

It doesn't look like he'd have much of a reason to make this move unless Poch had told him he'd get a fair shot at a starting place. If we went in to next season with Verts, Kaboul, Chiriches, Dier and Fryers as our CB's I'd be happy. If Lascelles was to come in too I wouldn't be overly bothered if we sold Chiriches or Fryers went out on loan.
The fact our wage offer for him breaks Sporting's structure could have helped.

I think the word pretty much gives you the answer to that.

HOME GROWN

Dier was not "grown" in England
I know what you are saying - and the homegrown rule is to develop young talent of all nationalities, but he shouldn't be taking a 'foreign' spot in our squad.

On reading up about this lad it seems he is articulate and intelligent. No chance in English football then.

Only joking, hopefully he can translate that into football intelligence - he is certainly built like a centre half and is clearly very promising. May be one to shine in the later part of the season or next year after Pochettino has worked on him.

Quite frankly as a Northern Irish supporting Spurs fan I don't give a fuck about the English national team and don't think Spurs as a club should have any agenda placed on us which forces us to develop English players ahead of any other nationality, which quite rightly is against EU law. The primary function of the homegrown rule is to cause clubs to put more focus into their academies and promotion from within. As a consequence of promoting more from the academies, yes England may see the benefits of this long term as an added bonus.

But if he left England aged 6, does it not count that he grew a lot from being born to aged 6 and therefore he did grow at home and could therefore be home grown?
I appreciate you are being deliberately facetious here. But how far do we take this? Let's say we accept Dier must be homegrown because he qualifies to play for England. Then what happens if a Brazilian comes over who has never spent a day in England in his life. He happens to have an English grandmother. This qualifies him to play for England. Is he homegrown?

The HG rule is completely separate from national allegiance. If Dier's affiliation with the FA through the youth teams qualifies him as homegrown then I can understand the logic there but not simply because he was born in England as then the rule becomes almost xenophobic.

I am Northern Irish also but I disagree, the top league and the country's FA should work together to the benefit of the national team, I think England is the only country in Europe where this doesn't happen and the performances of the England National Team reflect that.

German and Spanish domestic sides are successful as are their national sides.

Not as a result of a law which forces them to choose Spanish/German players over others. More due to the policies of clubs themselves.

We've bent them over is what I reckon.... I'm not a fan of screwing over a noted talent developer like Sporting. I just hope they don't have a long memory, I'd hate to see us locked out of the picture when their next big talent comes through.

It's not screwing them over at all, Spurs used a legitimate clause in the player contract which was inserted by Sporting.

I do enjoy how - and I'm guilty of this myself - we all write off young talent if they're not the finished article by 20. It's all a gamble isn't it? But, if he has created enough traction for Everton, Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham to consider his talents, then that's good enough for me.

Young, strong, articulate and intelligent (judging from his Twitter!).

interesting he is right footed as i watched a good few clips of him on youtube and he was on the left side of defence and used his left foot loads, i guess he must be comfortable on both.

I might be missing something but why do stories from the thanet gazette keep being posted? It is a really small local paper where I live. I might be missing something

My thoughts exactly! I live in Thanet and didn't even realise it was still going, thought it went under years ago! This is NOT a credible news site.

Exactly. I am amazed when I see these stories!

All hail the Thanet Gazette!

I can't help but feel like we got this guy in just because he's English. I was hoping we would get a CB for this season, not one for 5 years from now.

Maybe we will, there's a month to go of this window and I'd be very surprised if there isn't 1 in and Dawson out by then.

Presumably he will go into the development squad not the first team squad but he looks a good prospect, hope he makes it with us
