For me, his was the most encouraging performance yesterday. I know it was a 'nice' game to get his first run out at centre back but he looked totally at home and his composure on the ball started off two or three attacks, most noticeably for the goal. I think he deserves to keep his place in midweek.

Pretty sure it was his first appearance at CB for Spurs in general. I might be wrong, but I think that was his first appearance since he pulled out of the England u21 squad...

He's played RB a couple times since then I believe. I think that very well may be his first competitive CB appearance for us though, as I know he played in the Schalke friendly as a CB (and did stunningly well).

First game of the season against west ham, Naughton kaboul Dier and rose were the back line. So he has played CB before and in the league

That's true, I just think of him playing RB because that's where he was when he scored the goal. But you're absolutely right, he was only pushed out wide after Naughton's red.

Ah. Right. But he was only there for like 20 minutes or so until Naughton got a straight red

I thought he was at CB for the games he scored in?

He started CB against west ham, until naughton got sent off and moved to rb where he scored from.

In the next match against qpr (league) he was rb as Walker was injured and Naughton suspended. We had Verts and Kaboul CB and rose lb. So both have come from rb technically

Yes, decent performance on his return but despite all the struggles of Fazio, Dier still needs a lot more experience if he is to play at CB for us regularly. Good for him to learn from Jan, who is head and shoulders above our other CBs at the moment. Dier needs to work a little more on his positioning (see the Fletcher miss for instance) but for his age, seems a great prospect.

According to the linesman he played Fletcher onside (?) and then let him get to the ball first.

Why haven't we seen Mr Unhook since West Ham? Can he play up front?

Also, Dier was very good Sat, looks a more able deputy there than Vlad or Kabs to me

Only for about 25 minutes though. Not counting that one I'm afraid!!!

What a player this kid is proving to be. So glad he's getting a decent run at CB now and not RB - which was probably good for him to play a few games to learn about the position, but CB is where he must stay in future.

He's actually looking better than Jan in the last couple of games - big, strong, great in the air, good turn of pace, reads the game extremely well, totally calm under pressure.

Love it, future captain.

I can only echo most of your comments.

When Dier did not figure in the squad I wondered what was going on but perhaps Poch, with his staff, have been working behind the scenes to improve Dier before pitching him back in(?)

That ties in with Dier's pulling out of the England U21's earlier in the season in order to "work on his game at Centre Back" as was quoted.

I really like the look of him. Does the "simple" things well, and I like how he had no trouble giving both Vorm and Vertonghen some real hairdryers during the game.

Quality player, got everything. Not sure why he resorted to Dawson-esq long ball hoofs in the second half, really didn't help in allowing us to keep the ball, but I can forgive it.

He's first choice for me, better than Fazio already and just a matter of time before he's a starting England CB.

I really like Fazio, but I'd start this lad over him. Fazio is ridiculous in the air, but I feel Dier reads the game better and has a very good turn of pace for a CB and with Vertonghen not being the quickest and Walker not always able to recover I feel that's what gives him the upper hand. Fazio, Dier and Vertonghen have shown why I don't think we need to prioritise signing a CB this January

Really really happy with Dier and our three front line CBs in general. With some good prospects in the youth team, I'm not sure this is a position we need to strengthen in.

Looks so much better as a CB than an RB as well

I really like the look of this kid. He's aggressive, robust, decent in the air, pretty comfortable on the ground, and has the makings of leadership qualities about him.
