Looks like AVB is building a side full of players who can each play at least 2 positions each. Smart strategy I think. We certainly need Capoue's CB capabilities at the moment. If it goes through this gives us the following defensive options:
  • Kaboul – CB, can also cover RB
  • Vertonghen – CB, can also cover LB and DM
  • Dawson – CB only
  • Capoue – DM, can also cover CB
  • Fryers – LB, can also cover CB
  • Rose – LB, can also cover LW
  • BAE – LB only
  • Walker – RB only
  • Naughton – RB, can also cover LB
Not bad. I still think we'll bring in another CB, hopefully Vlad Chriches.

This drive for versatility in squad players also pts to a smaller squad going forward. Of established first-teamers anyway. It's a good thing. A slightly smaller group is easier to drill and fewer possible combinations will hopefully allow a fairly easy transition of players in and out of the side when needed over time. Less disruption etc. It also pts to a possibility that maybe not this season but sooner than later some of the more promising youngsters will be relied upon here and there in certain comps instead of calling up the half dozen "first teamers" we presumably store in a broom cupboard somewhere for months on end.

While we're at it we should snag Serge Aurier while they're selling to be a big upgrade on Naughton.

So far this has been a pretty bizarre window for me (or maybe it just feels that way as I've been up writing since 11:30 AM yesterday). Before the window opened I thought we could really do with a player that could cover both Sandro and Dembele, whilst ideally offering something a bit different. I didn't know much about Paulinho but several posters on here soon convinced me that he fits the bill perfectly.

After that, my ideal striker was Soldado. I didn't think he was remotely realistic. We got linked with Villa (who I fucking love), but at the same time I was concerned about his age. Then we were linked with the Belgian Heskey, but fortunately that flash in the pan was quickly put out. How we ended up getting Soldado I'll never know, and if it wasn't for the ongoing Bale bollocks I'd be cackling maniacally in the streets.

Capoue was also on my imaginary list, but never really though much of it. He's a classy player in my opinion and I'll be over the moon if we get him. The way AVB rotates his teams I don't think you could call him a back-up.

For the record the other players on my imaginary hit list included Isla, Lamela, and Belhanda.

He really is costing us 4m, Caulker's transfer taken into account....i'm liking what we are doing, imo this is the best incomings in one window we have had for donkeys.

It'll be interesting to see what our net spend for this summer is come 2nd September.

Think Hudd and Parker will be moved on. And maybe one or two others yet. Although there's very little ITK out there to suggest anything (there's no ITK on Capoue either mind you). I guess we're keeping an extremely tight ship in terms of information leaks this summer.

Seems to have an good eye for a forward pass from the back, should suit AVB's 'vertical' football. Useful addition considering he covers 2 positions...and seems to have pissed some Gooners off

I think capoue has been brought in due to his obvious qualities, but also it as we will make money on him straight away, we will sign him for somewhere in the region of £10m due to one year on his contract and his value is twice that on a 4 year deal before even kicking a ball. Also he will hit the ground running, cover at CB and for paulinho who will probably take 3-6 months to fully settle

I agree with most of these, but I would say walker probably could cover RM, I know he hasn't done it, but seeing how he spends most the time up the pitch anyway, I cant see it being much of a difference for him.

I like the idea of a streamlined versatile squad with quality all over. It also gives the younger players a realistic chance of being involved on matchdays. Players like Vejkovic, Bentaleb, Carroll and Ceballos will be on the bench a lot more in my opinion.

Thats got to be better than a sulky 30k a week player
