Swansea's amazing victory at the haemorrhoids stadium last night made it all the sweeter, for the idea that they might just nick a Ropey League place off us.

Also, because Gary Monk is a huge Spurs fan, so I bet he really enjoyed the win (y)

The plot thickens... Swansea 2 points behind us now and just 1 behind Saints.

They've got City coming up, and CP who are on a fierce run.

All I want to do is watch Spurs is much as I can. Of course I want us in the Europa League.

I want us to win the bloody competition too.

The arrogance of our League is disgusting, we are the only country who don't take this competition seriously.

I do want us in the Europa league but its essential that until the last 16 we play no one that could be in the team the following Sunday. That would also mean not taking them abroad and even Poch continuing to take first team training and planning in UK and then flying out just for the game. Once were in the last 16 (and second string premiership players should be good enough) then we bring in the main squad.

I always want us to be competing in Europe, regardless of stature and what it brings in terms of extra commitments - it would truly be a sad indictment on this club if we fail to even scrape a Europa League berth.

Play a predominantly youth-based selection in the early rounds by all means but i'm not having the fact that we are 'better off' without European football next season.

  • If we don't qualify for the Europa I will be very very disappointed, that should be a minimum requirement!

Yes, but use it for u21 squad etc with no first team travelling and even Poch staying at home with the first team. Eventually this competition will whither and die and the CL will go down to top 6

Let's have a season without it - one year without it will do us good IMO.
Why?

Has this years Europa League campaign had such a detrimental effect on our domestic campaign? Not in my eyes.

In fact, I can't remember a season where the general health of our players has been so good - certainly no crippling injuries through an extensive programme so I just don't see the rationale of denying a club like ours European football, an extra route of Champions Legue football and ultimately, a trophy of still some repute.

Just looking at the last time we were without it - then at Man U and Liverpool without and how well they both did. It's not something I normally advocate (as I love seeing us playing in Europe), but just have a feeling we will be better without it next season, as we will still be rebuilding and would rather have the extra time on the practice pitch than be travelling to deepest, darkest Transylvania.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City and Man Utd. Which of those four are we finishing above next season exactly? I'm assuming that's why many people don't want us in it, because it means we'll have a good chance of finishing above one of those 4 sides, plus Liverpool, if only playing one game a week.

I want us in the Europa league because is probably the only chance we'll have of getting back into the champions league, don't care how hard it is, it's a chance. It will be an absolute disaster if not in it in my opinion. Only takes a bad first 15 games and our season will be over in November except for the FA Cup. Sounds horrendous.

even with a bit of work in the transfer market, i'd not expect us to get CL football with or without EL next season.

the season we got CL, our squad was so much better than todays team, it had so much more balance.

But in typical Spurs fashion, it would probably turn out to be out detrimental not qualifying. United and Pool have a pedigree that we simply dont have, therefore can still attract and retain players that's to that - we can't. We need all the help we can get, and EL - certainly until the stadium is built - will be just that.

I wasn't exactly saying we are going to finish 4th without EL, I just want us to have a team with the philosophy ingrained. Just one season without EL. Focus on league and training in the philosophy, etc. I think that EL was a distraction this season with a new philosophy to implement. As a result, I don't think the implementation was done properly - time will tell if this was down to EL or Poch being bang average. I really hope it's the former.

See above. Just one season without EL. Do you really think EL is going to attract better players? We've been there for so many years consistently... I'd hope our 'sales pitch' to prospective new players could easily take care of that. You'd worry if we couldn't explain it.

fair enough on those reasons

I just want to see us play as much as possible, and if that means being in the Europa league then great. I also feel that until we get the new stadium, we need the extra revenue. the quicker the stadium is paid off the quicker we can afford the extra wages, to get better players. with the FFP rules we can't do anything at the moment, and would do even less without some form of European football

It looks tough if you match up the squads as was mentioned on a different thread.
But it is not all about head to heads - there are a lot of other teams that need to be professionally dispatched, and it is easy to lose focus as we know full well.

Lets put it like this - if we were on course for 72 points this season, we would have a great chance of a top4 spot. The discredited AVB managed that total recently - it is a reasonable target for this squad especially without europa dragging us down and it is a total that should put us right in the mix.

Of course back in the real world, we might not even break into 60+ points this season, but putting all that sad reality aside, top4 is attainable next season, imo.

Interviewer: "You want to play in europe next season, don't you??"
MP: "No..."
MP: "I want to play in europe next season."

So no mixed feelings there then.
