Europa is the one big achievement on AVB's CV. He is not going to undermine it by appearing to disrespect the competition. His problem is persuading the players to take it just as seriously. So we play near full strength teams, who do not give their all in the Europa, but do just enough to take the edge of their performance in the Premiership. I cannot see that changing, so fifth place and no silverware looks on the cards again next season.

It is a shame because I think we do, just about, have the strength in depth to rotate effectively and to select teams based on the quality of the opposition.

So Chelsea win the Europa League and finish 10th in the EPL. We get 4th in the EPL, but Chelsea take our spot in the CL again.

It'll happen..it's Spurs

Fantastic news.

I posted the bold paragraph below in the 'Glory or Money' thread back in April. It is entirely possible that by working with the sponsors and TV companies, the authorities CAN make this competition great again. Next step - change the format to have less teams/less games and increase the prize money. They have the power to do so.

On a separate note, AVB should be commended for his work in not dismissing the Europa League, but very publicly stating how important the competition is and fielding strong teams throughout our campaign. I am sure this will have been warmly greeted by UEFA.

I don't think the footballing authorities are doing enough to redress the balance back towards to the 'glory' mentality and incentivise teams to do well in cups. For example, by awarding the Europa League winner with a place in the final Champions League qualifying group and making the Europa League smaller with less games to give the competition more prestige, starting lineups would be stronger, more people would go to games, more people would watch games, and increased tv/sponsor/prize money would surely follow suit.

you know what will happen if the winners of next season euorpa league will get champs league.

spurs will finish 4th
arsenal finish 5th
Arsenal get knocked out of Champs League finishing 3rd in their group.
Arsenal go onto to winning the europa league
Spurs miss out on champs league spot due to 3 teams above them in the league and arsenal winning europa league.

can only happen to spurs...

well for many people in this thread, it must be a step in the right direction

Definitely a step in the right direction (will this apply for the winners of next year's tournament?)

Still should be getting rid of the Champions League rejects but at least it makes the tournament meaningful.

Also they really shouldn't limit the number of clubs from one league. If a team finishes above a team that wins either of the European competitions in the league then they shouldn't be ousted from the Champions League.

Sounds like forth will still get a place so why were we not allowed a place when Chelsea won the Champions League?

The place for the winners must be in addition to the league allocation, surely?

That's the rumour yeah, that a country could potentially have five entrants into the CL.

If they do make the EL winner have a shot at the CL then surely it should mean two things:

Scrap the CL dropouts and allow for more teams to qualify from the group stages
More TV Revenue for the Competition what with more teams going out to win it?

About time Uefa started using some sense, they must have realised after this year that the EL can be just as good if not more enjoyable than the CL.

Technically could it mean that 6 teams from a country could qualify for the CL?

E.g. if the team who comes 5th wins the Champions League and the team who comes 6th wins the Europa League.

Conclusion on the Guardian about the draft plans is that:

The team that wins the Europa League gets a CL place
If that team finishes outside the top 4, it still gets one (5 entrants)
If the team that wins the CL finishes outside the top 4, it still gets a CL place (5 entrants)
If teams from the same league won both the CL and EL AND both finished out of the top four, only then would the 4th place team miss out.

That's such an unusual occurrence it seems like it would be simpler to legislate to have 6 from one country in the unlikely event that happened to avoid the backlash.
