It’s been happening like this for decades.
Let’s not make out that this is something new.

When I was at school there was a girl a year younger who was in a relationship with a guy in early 20s. She was pregnant during GCSEs.
Also had a guy I played football with 20+ yrs ago, who was early 20s and dating a 16 yr old. They got married 3 years later.

I wasn't making it out to be something new - I was highlighting that legal and socially acceptable are two different states

I met my missus when I was 28 and she was 21. Shall I just go straight to the police station and turn myself in? :cautious:
I was about to turn 28 and my wife had just turned 22 when we met. But the difference in maturity is dramatically smaller (and in our case, probably non existent) than if we’d met when I was about to turn 22 and she had just turned 16 obviously.

On a different note my son's trampoline coach got put in jail for 16 years for child sex offences last year. That came as a shock

Certainly is. I would also say though that in most cases the difference in maturity between 28 and 21 is lot larger than between say 35 and 28 or 40 and 33.

In our case the difference in maturity did actually cause us to have a rocky relationship for the first several years.

Yeah agree with all of that. Basically, the older you get, the much shorter a year becomes.

With regard to this situation, obviously if there’s any truth in any of what’s been reported then it’s unacceptable, but I’m praying that there isn’t.

Depends on the individuals, doesn't it, which is what makes much of this conversation absurd

I haven't met anyone who married the person they dated at 16 (or so) that didn't regret/resent it later on in life. I know plenty exist, I've just never met one.

I think you do a lot of maturing between your teenager years and early 20's, but that can be accelerated for those leaving school at 16 and going straight into full time employment, and delayed for those who are still in education in their 20's.

One of the most annoying things I remember about dating girls in their late teens was that they had no appreciation of anything - I think society paints a picture where the average bloke has 5% body fat, the body of Zac Effron, and the chivalry of Hugh Grant. Better off picking them up in their late 20's, where they are ecstatic that you don't shag everything that moves and at least hold down a decent job :D

Straying a bit off topic ( and only relevant now as opposed to when I was in my early 20’s) but you can blame shit like Love Island for that.

Ironically painted as “reality TV”, when it fact it couldn’t be further from reality.

Should be one for the Grinds my Gears thread really, but “reality TV” has a whole heap of shit to answer for imo.

Movies, also. Woman are like 'Melissa McCarthy is what a real woman looks like' - meanwhile, Chris Evans (not the ginge) and Hemsworth are strutting around on screen labelled as 'thats what a real man looks like'.

You watch the behind the scenes stuff, and they both say shit like "yeah I had to be miserable for 6 months, eating nothing but salad and white chicken, and didn't drink any fluids 2 days before filming that scene".

Imagine how miserable the Mrs would get if you spent every evening in the gym and only eat dry salad and boiled white chicken.

Latest on this is in this article. Suggest said obvious player has been bailed and is in accommodation provided by the club, as his home is being searched. His wife is staying in their home country (which I assume he couldn't, due to bail conditions)

Has anyone been forwarded the WhatsApp thing that’s doing the rounds about this?

I’ve seen it but it’s obviously speculation and may not be ideal to post up what has been said.
