Nine mins extra time mainly due to Lloris injury
15:08 Crikey. You could feel that one from back here. Hugo Lloris cops a knee in the head from Romelu Lukaku as the Everton striker chases a throughball and the players all around the incident immediately signal for the medics. A dazed looking Lloris is up and walking,
14:56 SUBSTITUTION - Everton 0-0 Tottenham
Sigurdsson for Lennon
14:48 SUBSTITUTION - Everton 0-0 Tottenham
Sandro gives way as Mousa Dembele is introduced into the action. A gradual tweaking up of the attacking intent from Andre Villas-Boas.
HALF-TIME: Everton 0-0 Tottenham
Tottenham head for the half-time brews as the happier of the two teams.

Everton and Tottenham will both be looking to further boost their top-four credentials when they meet at Goodison on Sunday (kick-off 1.30pm).

Since suffering their first Premier League defeat of the season at Manchester City early last month, Roberto Martinez's Toffees have seen off Hull and won at Aston Villa. They sit two places and one point below Spurs, who also beat Hull and Villa after kicking off October with a loss

In last season's equivalent fixture, Clint Dempsey put Tottenham ahead on 76 minutes but late goals from Nikica Jelavic and Steven Pienaar produced a triumphant conclusion for the hosts. Spurs have lost on their last three trips to the blue half of Merseyside, and their last victory there came in February 2007 when Jermaine Jenas hit a late winner.

Villas-Boas' side will have to stop striker Romelu Lukaku if they are to come away with something from Goodison Park this time around.

Lukaku has scored five goals in seven games since joining on loan from Chelsea, where he used to work under Villas-Boas.

The Belgian was furious with his treatment by Villas-Boas during his time at Stamford Bridge, although the two have since buried the hatchet.

The Spurs boss risked a spat with his own supporters last weekend after criticising the atmosphere at White Hart Lane during the 1-0 win over Hull.

He may therefore be relieved to be on the road this weekend, although Everton are sure to make life tough for his side as they look to leap-frog them in the table.

Tottenham
Defender Danny Rose has still not recovered from a foot injury and will miss Tottenham's game at Everton on Sunday.

Full-back Kyle Naughton has a 50 per cent chance of playing after suffering a thigh injury against Hull on Wednesday in the Capital One Cup.

Winger Nacer Chadli (hamstring), striker Emmanuel Adebayor (foot) and defender Zeki Fryers (groin) are out, but winger Andros Townsend is fit after recovering from his nasty fall in last weekend's victory over Hull.

Everton
Striker Arouna Kone is ruled out for Everton with a knee injury.

Defender John Heitinga returns to the squad after sitting out the last two matches with a muscle problem.

Fellow centre-back Antolin Alcaraz is recovering well from a hernia injury and is expected to make his debut later this month while midfielder Darron Gibson (knee) is the only other absentee.

Arouna Kone's knee injury is more serious than first feared and the Everton forward will not face Tottenham.

John Heitinga is fit again, meaning only Kone, Antolin Alcaraz and Darron Gibson are unavailable for the Toffees.

Spurs will welcome back a host of first-team regulars who sat out the midweek League Cup win over Hull.

Younes Kaboul's return in that game means Danny Rose is Villas-Boas' only injury absentee.

While Andre Villas-Boas was asking for more from Tottenham's home followers last Sunday evening, he did at the same time lavish praise on the away support his side have been getting lately. They'll need all the help they can get for this Sunday's assignment.

Goodison Park, never a 'gimme' of a three points anyway, has proved this year to be one of the toughest places to visit irrespective of Everton's summer change of manager.

This season, Everton have dropped only two points there - the 0-0 draw with West Brom in Roberto Martinez's first home league match as manager.

Their last defeat in front of their own supporters came in early March when Martinez's Wigan triumphed in the FA Cup quarter-final.

In fact, that is the one and only time they've lost at home in 16 matches in all competitions in 2013.

It is still early - not quite yet five months into his tenure - but Martinez's appointment is looking a sound one. Shrewd signings, good results thus far.

Everton's current points tally after nine games (18) was only bettered once in David Moyes' 11 full seasons in charge - in the 2004-05 campaign when they went on to achieve his highest finish of fourth.

However, there was a reason Villas-Boas was talking up the way things are for his team away from home this season - because it's been going swimmingly.

Okay, there was the defeat at the Emirates in the North London derby but besides that they've won all seven games they've played across all the competitions however far and wide their travels have taken them - and without conceding a single goal.

All that leads to the conclusion that it should be a very decent contest.

Head-to-head

  • Tottenham have won only two of their last 12 Premier League games against Everton (W2, D5, L5).
  • The Toffees won the corresponding fixture 2-1 last season thanks to stoppage time goals by Steven Pienaar and Nikica Jelavic.
  • Tottenham lost only two of their first 15 Premier League games at Goodison Park, but have not won in the last six (D3, L3).
Everton

  • Everton are unbeaten at home this season in all competitions (W4, D1).
  • After drawing their opening three Premier League games, the Toffees have won five of their last six.
  • Everton have earned more points after conceding the first goal (four) than any other Premier League team this term.
  • Romelu Lukaku has scored five goals in his last five league games for Everton.
  • Kevin Mirallas has a Premier League-high four assists this season.
Tottenham

  • No side has kept more clean sheets in the Premier League this season than Tottenham (6).
  • Spurs' tally of 19 points after nine games represents their best-ever Premier League start.
  • Tottenham have won four games 1-0 this season, matching their total from last season.
  • Three of Roberto Soldado's four Premier League goals have come from the penalty spot - Spurs didn't win a single penalty last term.
  • Only Hull (seven) have scored fewer goals among top-half teams than Tottenham (nine).
  • Andros Townsend has had 22 shots from outside the box this season, only one fewer than Hull have had in total.

After a week of not very inspired performances and in-fighting between the manager and the fans, this is a real chance to stamp our authority all over the Premier League's face.

A win here would be massive. If we can contain Lukaku then I think we've got a real chance.

Still no Rose..... =(

Sad truth is that even when he does come back he might be a bit shit for a few weeks.

Playing midweek the past two weeks will really hurt us for this...Dembele and Paulinho looked knackered after the 120 minutes, hopefully one of them can recover and then get a week off. Walker was running all over the place too and now has Baines to accompany him.

Holtby over Eriksen in this one considering the circumstances (Everton fan growing up, father, etc).

If Kaboul can play then he's our best weapon against Lukaku, I actually think he could shut him down, Lukaku relies on pace/strength and not skill, Kaboul matches him in those departments...Unfortunately he also had to go 120 minutes. I'm expecting Dawson/Chiriches though which could be a big problem. Verts out left if Rose can't play, probably up against his countryman Mirallas.

Playing Lamela would be big for his confidence but surely he won't start after 120. Definitely sub him in as a vote of confidence, likely for Lennon who won't have done anything up til then.

I'd hope for:

Lloris
Walker - Kaboul - Verts - Rose
Paulinho - Sandro - Capoue
Townsend - Soldado - Holtby

Probably will see:

Lloris
Walker - Chiriches - Dawson - Verts
Sandro - Paulinho
Townsend - Holtby - Lennon
Soldado
(Maybe Townsend+Lennon swapped so Lennon can help with Baines)

This is going to be tough, not expecting a good result here with our annoying midweek ventures...Goodison is a hard place to play at but I almost like our chances better there right now because we won't have to push as much. Tired legs gonna play a big part, will need big games from Sandro and probably Capoue in the 2H to keep the defense safe.

Looks like a 1-1, 1-0 or 2-1 either way for me. Think a draw is a good result.

This but with Eriksen on the left and Townsend on the right.

Don't think it'll happen though.

I reckon AVB will go with:

Lloris
Walker Chiriches Dawson Verts
Sandro Paulinho
Townsend Holtby Lennon
Soldado

According to Ben Pearce re AVB's press conference, Rose won't likely be back until after international break! :(

Probably right but I did purposefully swap sides due to lack of width on the left.

He said the same about Capoue before the last international break and we haven't seen him back yet....does anyone know if he's even back training?
I'd love to see Kaboul start, but after playing 120mins vs hull I think that's very unlikely :(

Big if but if we can keep Lukaku quiet then I think we'll do them. Martinez's teams are usually shaky at the back and by attacking it will really suit us.
