Basel won 1-0 on Sunday while Grasshoppers could only manage a scoreless draw against Luzern, so the two are now level on points at the top of the table. The Swiss league is fairly open but most analysts are saying Grasshoppers have the slightly easier run-in.

The team was clearly tired and travel weary but their class shone through in the end against a poor Thun side. Basel controlled the game and even missed a penalty, there weren't really any chances for Thun which is another testament to the Basel defense.

Streller scored a beautiful goal late that won it, here are the highlights.

What a finish!

Do they play on a proper pitch or a plastic one?

Look quite beautiful to me:

Hey guys, just thought I'd update you...

Basel play their league game tomorrow (Monday) vs Luzern (9th of 10 teams) which is really bizarre scheduling, I'm not sure why this came to be like this. However, Grasshoppers lost yesterday vs Thun in a huge upset so Basel are still level on points in first with Grasshoppers with a game in hand (tomorrow).

Obviously this is very poor scheduling because now they have to play Monday morning and then fly out to England for a Thursday game and won't have that much preparation time. To be fair, Basel are used to playing Saturday/Sunday and then having CL on Tuesday/Wednesday but I still thought this was a bit bizarre.

I am unsure if Basel will see this as a chance to make sure they win against Luzern and have a lead in the table (adding pressure on Grasshoppers, who seem to be faltering a little right now), or if they will play a second string side against 9th place Luzern and hope to get at least a point out of it...Luzern are playing better of late, 4 Draws and 1 Loss in their last 5, they are proving tough to break down. Got a draw vs Grasshoppers in their last game.

I will update you tomorrow once I see the lineup they put out. It will probably say a fair deal about whether they will prioritize first in the league or trying to advance in Europe.

Do they play on a proper pitch or a plastic one?

St. Jakobs Park is natural grass as far as I know. When we played YB we struggled a lot with the artificial turf, hopefully that won't happen this time.

SJP (St. Jakob Park) has natural grass.

Basel is my home town team and they are looking a really solid team at the Moment.
Also able to win ugly, like top teams generally do.

Sommer is a really good keeper. Dragovic as thick as two short planks, but pretty decent defender when his brain is working.

Salah is really really quick, finishing lets him down. Diaz will miss 1st leg.
Stocker is pretty decent in left and orobably most creative in terms if assists in team.

Alex Frei is retiring at end of season, is being used as joker. Watch his free kicks!

Streller is on form striker, which is by miles more than what weve got.

We need to play home leg to nill and with a two or three goal margin, cause I can see us scoring in SJP.

Well, Basel destroyed Luzern today 4-0 away from home.

They played:

Streller
Stocker - Diaz - Salah
Serey Die - F. Frei
Park - Schar - Dragovic - Degen
Sommer

Which is a pretty strong lineup for them. It's worth noting that they did this before their first leg vs Zenit too...They then played a lot of non first XI players in the first leg vs Zenit and still totally dominated that game, so they do have a deep squad.

If there are changes to be seen for our game, I'm willing to bet that probably both CMs will be replaced, and of course Diaz is suspended. One of the wingers may be rotated. To replace Diaz, either Alexander Frei will come in and drop back or Fabian Frei will push up.

Just guesses but that's what would make sense to me. I'll keep an eye out for what Murat Yakin says over the next few days.

You reckon Cabral will come back into the Basel team Strikeb4ck? Worried he could go through Dembélé and especially Parker - seemed to be a very impressive physical presence in midfield last year.

Who is the creative replacement for Shaqiri (and to an extent Xhaka as well) from last year?

No problem, glad to help.

Cabral should definitely be back, and yeah, he is a presence. As said, he is a bit streaky and inconsistent but if he's playing well he can really cause problems.

Shaqiri and Xhaka have been largely replaced by that AM trio of Stocker (who can now play week in week out on his favored flank with no Shaqiri which has made him better), Diaz (underperformed but starting to hit stride), and Salah (dangerous player)...They also play 2 up top more often with Streller and Frei/Zoua.

However, these 2 were definitely huge losses and as a result they've turned to other strengths, which is the defense. As you can see, another clean sheet. They are tough to break down. I'd be surprised if we scored more than twice in either game.

Well, hope you all aren't too shocked with what just happened! Warned you that they were a very dangerous team with a fantastic young manager, we were completely outplayed today. Best performance at WHL this season, I'd say.

We are in big trouble now...They have two away goals (they are fantastic in defence), get 3 crucial players back, will have a capacity stadium and probably the best atmosphere of their season in the next match, not to mention we've lost players.

Basel tied 1-1 today with St Gallen (at St Gallen), who are by no means a shabby team and actually beat Basel earlier in the season.

However, Basel should have lost today, St Gallen were in total control of the match. Looks like Europe really tired them out. Grasshopper won the Zurich derby yesterday so things are back to being very close at the top, with Basel only a point ahead.

Basel play Zurich at home this next weekend, which could be a difficult match, so maybe it will factor in slightly to their Thursday selection.
