Redknapp keeps tabs on Fernando Cavenaghi as he looks to improve Spurs strikeforce

Harry Redknapp believes Fernando Cavenaghi may be the solution to Tottenham's striking problems.

New Spurs manager Redknapp has had the £13million-rated Argentinian striker watched in his last two French league games for Bordeaux.

The 25-year-old impressed in the games against Le Havre and Nancy and Redknapp's spies will be watching him again before January.

Cavenaghi was linked with a move to Liverpool last month but guaranteed first team football in the Premier League puts the White Hart Lane side ahead in the race.

He is perfect for Spurs as he offers a different threat to Darren Bent and Roman Pavlyuchenko, who are too similar to play up front together.

The four-cap international has a number of admirers, though, as Serie A side Palermo, Germans Stuttgart and Spanish side Real Betis are also interested.

Bordeaux, managed by former Manchester United defender Laurent Blanc, publicly say they do not want to sell but a big money bid from Spurs is likely to change their mind.

nah, he is 25 and the way the scouting networks are he would have been picked up on by now.

only making a name in france now at 25, i dont feel it would be any better than what we have, especiall at that price tag.

I hope we sign Owen

He was considered a huge talent as a kid at River Plate (55 goals in 89 games a/c to wiki), and then - like many South American prodigies - was bought as an "investment" by mobski money.

Russia is a difficult place for young South American players to adapt to - much more difficult than going to say Spain where the language is the same (apart from Brazilians) and climate & the style of football is pretty similar to Sth America.

Here are his goals for Bordeaux when he scored 8 in 7 and got recalled to the Argentine national team:

Some classy finishes (lifting the ball over the keeper), but ultimately it depends on what our scouts think, and they don't have a great track record in France recently....

Owen or Defoe for me. I'm not sure about risking another foreign player when we already have Pavylcuhenko.

he has'nt just started making a name for himself. In Argentina he was considered as exciting a goalscorer as Tevez when he was 19. Spartak screwed him over and he's starting to really look class again at Bordeaux. Look at his goal record... I would have no qualms whatsoever in spending 10 or 12 mill on Cavenaghi.

The same could be said of Arshavin who was also older and more expensive than this fella but still alot of our fans were creaming themselves at the thought of him joining us. Funny thing is that all along I said we did'nt need him as we had 2 players already at the club who can play his AM/CF role in GDS and Modric. I wonder where Modric has been playing, and getting plaudits, in the last 3 games for us since HR has taken over......

We were linked with him in the summer and i said at the time id be happy if we signed him. Now though i feel we need a fox in the box type player to finally replace Keano. Cavenaghi is known as the little bull and i think he is too similar to what we already have, two big strikers

Saw him two or three times last season. He looked pretty useful—probably the best striker in Ligue 1 that we'd have a chance of signing. I haven't been keeping up this season, though. Most Frog games are so ballsachingly dull I can't summon the energy.

Defoe please. At least he'd be straight from the off, rather than the European method of checking in at the hair stylists and Armani stockists before working out the pace of the game and the names of your mates.

SS57, correct me if I'm wrong but Fred has not signed a new contract as yet at Lyon has he hence he'll be available for a nominal fee in Jan otherwise on a free in the summer right...?

It seems, when he is given a chance to play, he scores. He was on the bench at Bordeaux not getting a game and they were struggling a bit for fit strikers, suddenly he came on as a sub, got a goal, then got another, began starting and kept on scoring and Bordeaux finished second.

We were linked a little with him in January, amongst about 50 million others.

Like how the article assumes Pav and Bent cant play together. I think they could actually form a decent partnership, we just need the rest of the team to work with them (a bit more than they did with berbs and keane). They work hard enough.

Fred apparently wants truly insane money. I did try to follow the saga last January and I'm not sure that we really did put in a serious offer then or whether it was just paper talk. Aulas seemed to be trying to push him on to PSG, then he was saying he would be staying but be third choice behind Baros and Benzema, next thing you know Baros is off to Pompey and Fred's flavour of the month again. I get the impression that he's not the easiest customer to deal with. I must check up on l'Equipe.

In the Eredivisie, AZ's top striker is really on a roll—10 goals so far. Bloke called Mounir el-Hamdaoui. Sounds vaguely familiar for some reason.

 Yup - another talent we didn't handle terribly well.

He was unlucky in dislocating his shoulder & getting other injuries on loan to Derby.

I don't know why we didn't loan him back to Holland for a season rather than selling him for next to nothing.
