The Last Word On Spurs latest podcast was interesting as they had a journalist on who shared his insight from interviewing Nuno.

He caveated it saying he didn’t have that long with him but that he did find his answers to be very short and quite prickly.

It’s an interesting one as whilst Nuno won’t piss people off and throw players etc under the bus in the same way that Jose did in the media, his often aloof approach to the media won’t help when trying to endear himself to our fans.

I think with any manager especially in modern football, their use of the media is important and is part of the whole package of the manager including their tactics and motivational skills.

The win and performance against Villa was much much more positive and I hope that continues and if it does then results will come and playing football like that and winning games the majority of the fans will be happy.

However I do feel that as we know Nuno was about our 7/8th choice and there were and are concerns about his style of play so when you add to that he’s fairly prickly and cold/aloof to the media I think it is an extremely hard job for him to win over the fans and keep them on side especially when the going gets tough.

I don’t think he will change as he’s naturally a shy person and doesn’t like interacting with the media, he’s said himself he prefers being on the training ground and that is fair enough. The media duties must be a ballache for every manager but I think Spurs fans love a manager who is more warm open and honest like Jol, Redknapp and Poch and if Nuno was a bit more like that then it would help him keep a better feeling with the fans if/when we do have a bad performance or result.

Poch's pressers were often dull, boring and shit.
Honestly I couldn't give a fuck what he's like with the press, all I care about is what happens on the pitch.

Nuno always seems perfectly upbeat, friendly and open when speaking to our club's media team before and after games.

If he's going to be prickly toward some members of the press, that's fine with me. They deserve it.

I've certainly seen plenty of interviews where that isn't the case, so perhaps it's just certain journalists or news outlets he doesn't have time for. Again, fine with me.

Alex Ferguson didn't speak to the BBC for the best part of a decade. Jose pissed plenty of journalists off. It's not a manager's job to court favour from the press who are only ever looking for a soundbite or an angle to tear someone down from.

If Potter is offered the job in the future he’d find it very hard to turn down. There are a lot more positive reasons for managing THFC than negative ones. I know everyone is down on the club at the moment but realistically we are still a big draw. Potter isn’t 100% happy at Brighton either. He wanted to keep Ben White and sign a new striker desperately in the summer and they didn’t get him one. He’s having to rely on Danny Welbeck to be fit FFS!
On the other hand saying he doesn't want to work with Levy he is very unlikely to be offered a job in the future.

Loved Poch but his pressers were weird and bizarre more often than not..

One thing on this is that we say we want to see more non-white managers in top club jobs, or any club jobs for that matter, and when we have one I worry when people say they're uncomfortable and they don't know why exactly. I can see real reasons why Nuno looks a bad appointment but it shouldn't be because he's an introvert or doesn't look right or something. People have different styles. I heard Barney Ronay on Football Weekly saying when he thinks of Spurs managers his mental picture is Terry Venables, and of course Nuno is very different to that but you'd like to think we could widen our range a bit.

Started dreading quotes and clips from them in the last 18 months of his time. Undermined the club and did nobody any favours a good few times. To be honest, one of my least favourite bits of having him as coach was the weird shit he would come out with after a while.

Not to mention his refusal to shut down moves to bigger clubs whenever he was linked to them.
To want any manager to be more like Poch with the press is just odd.

I've genuinely not come across even a single instance of someone mentioning his race, or making the most subtle of stereotypical jibes that has subconsciously racial undertones. I usually have a good sense for these things but I feel like the criticism in this case has been almost entirely football-related. I personally couldn't give a shit if he's prickly. I never minded AVB either, and he was particularly cold and devoid of emotion. It is odd that it irks people, but I'm not even one to bother listening to interviews these days. They're an endless cycle of bullshit cliches made under duress

My post was absolutely nothing to do with race and at no point did I say I was 'uncomfortable' with Nuno and I've not seen anyone else post anything remotely like that so not really sure what on earth you're talking about.

I'm also not saying 'he is a bad appointment because he is an introvert', but I do think he could be slightly warmer and more open in the media as like it or not, in modern football the way a manager acts in the media will have an influence on fans opinions and support towards them. As I said it is a positive that he doesn't tend to criticise players or throw them under the bus in the media like Jose did but he certainly doesn't have the smile and charm and cheek that Poch did which over time made our fans fall in love with the guy and create a very special bond.

All managers and personalities are different but I do think as good as they are tactically, Pep and Klopp use the media very well to galvanise their fans and team behind them, Poch built a similar atmosphere and feeling, its not a huge criticism just an observation that if he was slightly more open and warm in the pressers it may help some fans to warm to him a bit more.

Yea he did have a few strange ones and he wasn't perfect and at times he was prickly too but completely different character to Nuno, Poch for the most part had a warmth and charm and humour about him. Jol and Redknapp also 'got' Spurs and again were more open and honest and warm in the interviews(not always).

Again its not a huge criticism of Nuno he is his own man and that is fine but I'd like to see him be a little more open in the pressers, he's extremely serious a lot of the time and again that is great that he is dedicated and that is his character BUT given the pre-conceptions about his style of play and him being 7/8th choice manager I think if I was advising him, I'd get him to be a tad more light hearted and open in the interviews to give the fans a bit more of a chance to warm to him (just my opinion on it).

Poch funny press moments

Poch funny press moments 2

Martin Jol on the history of Spurs and how managing them is a fairtale

Harry Redknapp 1mins 30 seconds speaking about Spurs and our history etc, he got it.

Ah, Aitch. If only he hadn't got greedy, he might have lasted longer.

He's talking about West Ham btw, not us.

Don't usually agree with you mate haha ;) but fair points.

I wasn't saying that the manager should court favour from the press just that given the reservation of some fans to Nuno's appointment initially and due to his style of play (tbc) I feel like if he was a bit more open with the media it could help build more of a togetherness with him and the fans like Poch had, whereas often he answers questions in a very short and guarded manner which can be seen as pushing people away.

As you say he is a bit more upbeat and open with our clubs media whereas with the general media he is a bit more prickly and some of them are massive pricks so probably do deserve it haha.

Not really something that bothers me or is a big criticism just an observation that I feel he could tweak slightly to improve his image and perception with our fans.

Anyways main thing is obviously the performances and results so if they keep being similar to the Villa game then happy days.

Updated link. Good old Aitch / Arry.

The Wolves fans seemed to love Nuno so hopefully if the results and performances can continue like they did vs Villa in the last game then hopefully that will galvanise the fans behind him. I still have my reservations but it would be great if he can succeed as the last thing we need really is yet more change.

I've seen a few posts like "I don't like him, I don't what it is." so you do wonder.

You're right he's not good at playing the media game, and it will probably do for him, along with the Board and the fans. None are these seem very supportive at the moment.

I think we've had a fair old range in recent years don't you? Redknapp, Poch, Jose and Nuno all different but no cigar.

The greatest managers of last few decades have been pretty awkward or miserable with the press. Pep, Fergie, Ancelotti, Klopp, Lippi, Jose etc

So who actually cares if we are getting results.
