Warning: this is a "friend of a friend" story.

A work colleague's son met David Bentley the other day. He works in the sportswear business and supposedly Bentley was in trying to scrounge some freebies.

Anyway, whilst "negotiating" with him this guy asked Bentley why he was being played on the left. His answer ?

"Your guess is as good as mine"

Worrying if true, and I believe it is true as my colleague has little interest in football. He couldn't even remember the players name until prompted.

But he hasn't. Well, not all the time. And when you consider the natural fluidity we're trying (albeit failing miserably at right now) to play with, this sounds like a player who really couldn't be arsed to talk to Joe C. Public when he has better things to be doing.

Yes it must be tough being paid £20K per week that you have to scrounge freebies.

He's on the right flank right now.

And let's hope he stays there! Looked like we made our first tentative steps tonightI hope Ramos has worked out why its good to put players in the right positions.

Not sure if i believe you on this one, you say the guy who said this knows nothing about football and doesnt even know David Bentley's name, but some how manages to know hes playing on the wrong side of the pitch and asks him about it?

To be honest I know he scored tonight & has mainly been played out of position on the left of Midfield but over all been really disapointed with Bentley so far his set plays & crosses havent been up to scratch for a player with his reputation. Not sure if its his price tag weighing him down or did read in paper the other day that apparently he didnt feature for England in last two games as Capello want impressed with his fitness and Ramos has now put him on special fitness program to get him up to scratch. I guess like the rest of the new boys we need to give them time to settle in!

I think personally we will start seing the best of David Bentley as the season progresses and once hes settles down a bit more. We all know hes a top player, we saw it at Blackburn, but he wasn't exactly a hit there when he first played at ewood park either and then all of a sudden hes one of the best right midfielders in the land! The guy will be quality ;)

Exactly what I was thinking...

He doesn't like sport and can hardly recall the players name until prompted, yet when he saw him he knew all about him and where he has been playing recently (as well as knowing him well enough to realise this was not his natural postion)

Am I missing something?

Nope! It appears to be a case of asking, and answering, a question to oneself without knowing the answer!

Sorry, should have made the first post clearer. My colleague's son is a Spus fan and knows football. He then told his father about the incident. Knowing I am a Spurs fan the father retold the story to me but had to be helped to remember key details like the players name.

If this chap has little interest in football and needing prompting on recalling David Bentley's name then I fail to understand how he would know Bentley has on one or two occasions this season played on the right wing?

Sorry, I don't believe
