I reckon maybe this is a touchy subject, but I really do believe that Gallas has made to many errors to be on the pitch anymore. As much as I would like to see Dawson on the pitch, I would take anyone over Gallas. He cost us three goals today and not to mention others in other games, he is not the right man for the job anymore, and has proven that today. Any thoughts?

I've got a feeling it'll be Jan and Caulker at CB and Naughton at LB against Southampton. Maybe Caulker could have tracked Cahill a bit better for the first goal, but you can put that down to inexperience. Gallas's clearances for the first 2 goals were truly awful. He shouldn't be making mistakes like that.

Jan needs to come back in the middle and Gallas gets dropped when any of the LB's come back.

I don't think Gallas has been so bad this season, we need his experience at the back. I thought he played very well at Man Utd, there wasn't so much noise then. You watch the goals again and you will see they weren't all down to him. Watch Walker watching Mata make his run for the 3rd goal and doesn't do anything. It sometimes looked liked Gallas against Chelsea.

Said in another thread, I will lose a lot of respect for avb if he drops caulker when BAE is back. Verts is a leader and should be playing in the middle and caulker has played very well. Don't see daws being the answer, but a cb pairing of 2 of verts/caulker/kaboul could do us for the next 5 years

I think it's clear that Dawson cannot play in AVB's high pressing game, he's not comfortable enough on the ball and he's too slow for this system. We all love Daws but his limitations are painfully obvious.

Considering he was great against Man Utd I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, he wasn't great to today but he's usually dependable, that said I would like to see a pairing of Caulker and Verts next week.

Bit OTT, certainly wouldn't take anyone over him.

We all know this season is going to be a bit up and down. AVB has a clear plan for how he wants to play and it's going to take a few transfer windows to bring in the personnel he needs as well as selling those that don't fit.

Once Dembele and Bale were out we knew the cover didn't suit how AVB wants to play.

Gallas is in his last season and Dawson doesn't really fit in.

Once BAE is back a central defensive partnership of Caulker and Vertonghen will be much better and once Kaboul is back we'll have excellent options for CB.

But in the meantime lets not scapegoat every poor performance from players who won't be here soon anyway.

gallas is terrible tbh.

was passed it at arsenal so i dont know why he is regarded good enough to start for us in 2012...

not a big fan of dawson but he should be coming in the next game for gallas, naughton for walker aswell (who i am a big fan of but i cant even defend his performances this season so far, complacently isn't even the right word for how bad he is playing)

We were always going to miss Kaboul. That was a huge blow losing him for such a long period.

I'd like to think Gallas is only backup now when everyone's fit

Dawson and Caulker temporarily while Kaboul and Benny are out. Then Have Caulker and Vertonghen and then Kaboul Vertonghen when younes is eventually back..

I was in no way saying dawson was the answer, or saying that gallas should not play because of this one game. imo gallas has been making too many mistakes to be in the back four, and not just this game, he is consistently making bad mistakes, and we have lost or drawn games because of it. i also agree that walker has not been up to snuff this season, he can be brilliant, but definitely not right now.

I completely agree with dawsfan and everybody else who says we shouldn't be playing him. I've been consistent in criticising him since last season as since his first season with us he has been below the required standard. His performance against Chelski in the cup last season was possibly the worst that I have ever seen from a top-flight centre-back. This is what I wrote in today's match thread:
Is William Gallas still on Chelsea's payroll? I assume he isn't, so why does he look like a sunday league player whenever we play them?

I thought that he might be alright today as Drogba wouldn't be there to push him around, but instead he let himself be out-muscled by an anorexic midget. If Oscar manages to win a physical battle against anybody else this season I'll be amazed, but he had no trouble against our boy.

The consensus seems to be that Gallas is playing because of his experience. But what use is experience if when you can't climb high enough to head a ball completely away you head it to the edge of the box instead of flicking it away from the goal for a throw-in or corner? What use is experience if when the rest of the back four is holding the line you drop back by yourself to play everybody onside? Time after time after time. I feel sorry for Caulker; he's doing his best but is continually being let down by his more 'experienced' colleague, who knows that he is too slow to track runners so tries to get a head start on them and thereby fucks up the entire defensive plan.

If Gallas ever plays for us again it will be too soon. Give me Dawson over him any day.

He's more mobile than Gallas. And it's not like he can't pass the ball.. Dawson needs to at least be given a go, Gallas has been poor and Dawson has looked good in the Cup competitions.

More mobile, did you see him again Panathanaikos? I've never heard Dawson being called ore mobile than anyone let alone Gallas

More mobile :D

Of course he can pass the ball, every footballer can but he's not comfortable on the ball so to compensate for his weakness he ends up hoofing the thing which make up lose possession which totally contradicts AVB's system.

But this is just the fickleness of fans because after the UTD game he was immense and the best player in our team yet we didn't see people calling Dawson more mobile than him nor did we have campaigns for him to be dropped from the team permanently.

I said in the match thread that he mistimes everything, headers, clearances, controlling the football. missed a good chance in the first minute because he couldn't sort his feet out, mistimes two headers in the build up to the first. Goes with the wrong foot and skews his clearance for the second, then he's flat footed and doesn't know which way to turn when the ball gets played inside him for the third. He also never seemed to be in line with the other defenders.

Love that people complain about Gallas' mistakes but want Dawson to play. Great idea, put someone even slower than gallas at CB. Once BAE comes back Gallas will be dropped and we'll play Verts and Caulker as the CBs

I was hoping someone would start a thread about Gallas' performance today. Shocking. Nothing else quite fits the bill I'm afraid. He has slowly but surely been letting more and more mistakes in to his game and it has come to a bit of a head in todays match.

I was gob-smacked at what he did for the first goal. Of all the places to try and head the ball...... straight back in to the danger area!!?? The easiest thing to do would have been to flick the ball backwards. Simple. That would have dealt with the situation no problem. I mean, what was he actually thinking? That has to be one of the most stupid defensive errors that anyone can make. For a supposedly 'experienced' player, that was just atrocious. What, in all his years of playing, led him to believe that he was doing the right thing? What bit of 'experience ' told him that, that was the safest place to head the ball? Simply awful.

I have a clear-as-a-bell memory from when I was about 8/9 years old while at training one evening, my coach said to our group, " ..in defensive situations, never play the ball back across your own goal-mouth. Never!" And that has stuck with me. I can imagine that every player gets told that if they train with a half decent coach, so for someone like Gallas to make such a 'school-boy mistake' simply stuns me to disbelief.

His part in the third goal is also dubious. He could have easily intercepted that pass to Mata but didn't even raise his leg. People may say Walker should have done this or that and he could have, but he had another player still on the wing to take care of in case the play came back that way, Gallas on the other hand, was not marking anyone. Caulker had Torres, Walker had Hazard I think it was, and Gallas was watching thin air. When it gets to those situations, the defender should be getting in the ball or the players way, any which way they can. He simply watched it go past, about one yard in front of him then tried to track back when it was far to late.

If you watch him, he see's Mata make the run, he looks at him, makes as if to go cover him, decides not to, then looks again and does the same movement to go to him but again, decide not to, then the pass comes, rolls in front of him and he doesnt bother to stick his leg out then he turns to chase back and its all to little too late.

Then the third goal. He doesnt even bother to come and defend at all. It is Walkers fault for messing around with the ball. What was he trying to do? But Gallas should have been there to cover and he wasn't. He may have made the difference if he was there as Mata would not have had that straight run at goal.

There were lots of mistakes by lots of players dishing out poor performances today. Gallas was not the only, other players had a day to forget, its just Gallas was the most prominant. Sandro was awful as well. Walkers defensive frailties once again showed themselves. Dempsey was very poor.

I think we would have done the Chavs if we were at the races today, we had them on the ropes from the start of the second half. Im gutted.
