Promising, although does sound like the journalist has been reading SC...

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/gareth-bale-transfer-tottenham-try-2167158

Tottenham will make a last-ditch attempt to persuade Gareth Bale to stay on when he returns from international duty.

The 24-year-old winger remains in limbo, with Spurs demanding a world-record £105million for him and Real Madrid so far yet to come up with the money.

Bale, who sat out Wales’ Wednesday night game against the Republic of Ireland, has his heart set on a move to the Bernabeu and has not played for his club in over a month.

But Tottenham have not given up on the possibility that he could yet be their player on September 3 - after the transfer deadline.
They are convinced that, for all their talk about breaking the bank to land the player, Real cannot actually afford Bale.

Now, in the latest twist in the saga, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is set to try to break the impasse in talks with his prize asset.
The White Hart Lane club's billionaire owner, Joe Lewis, has sanctioned a sum of £50m for new players this summer and is ready to continue spending big, even in the unlikely event that Bale does stay.

Roma have already been sounded out over free-scoring Argentine winger Erik Lamela, while Ajax’s Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen – with only a year left on his contract – has indicated he is willing to move to north London.

Tottenham are also set to bring in a new left-back and a centre-half.
Despite suggestions to the contrary from new Real coach Carlo Ancelotti, the club’s president Florentino Perez remains fixated on taking Bale to the Spanish capital.

But Levy will not budge from his massive valuation and there has been little progress in negotiations – Real have refused Tottenham’s attempt to have Spain Under-21 striker Alvaro Morata included in part-exchange.

In the meantime, there has been a mixed reaction – inside and outside the Real dressing room – to the prospect of spending so much money on the Tottenham star.

Captain Iker Casillas said last month: “He one of the best three or four players in the world.”
But their superstar Cristiano Ronaldo declined to endorse the possible capture of Bale.

Barcelona stars Xavi and Jordi Alba, meanwhile, both claimed not to have seen the Welshman play.
Manchester City and Spain striker Alvaro Negredo said on Wednesday: “Bale is not yet on the same level as Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.”

Former Spurs and Real Madrid boss Juande Ramos claimed: “Talking about those figures is an insult - especially considering Spain’s current economic situation.”

Tottenham officials are attempting to prolong Gareth Bale's move to Real Madrid for one more season
Tottenham majority shareholder Joe Lewis will allow Levy to carry on spending this summer on at least three big signings, with Spurs having already splashed out £50m on new players.

Lewis wants Bale to spurn the advances of Real Madrid and give Spurs one more year because he believes with the top three clubs – Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea – all in transition under new managers, a serious title challenge is within their grasp.

Lewis wants Bale to lead that assault, with the promise that the Welshman can go next summer when Spurs recoup the money they have spent by entering the Champions League.

Daniel Levy has told Real Madrid that Tottenham will not accept anything less than £105m for Bale
Real have so far offered £86m, which was dismissed by Levy.
The top two targets before the transfer window shuts on September 2 are Roma’s Argentina winger Erik Lamela, who will cost about £30m, and Ajax’s £8m Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen.

Spurs will also compete with Liverpool for Anzhi Makhachkala’s £30m Brazilian striker Willian.

Also on the shopping list is Croatian teenager Alen Halilovic, dubbed the ‘new Luka Modric’, for whom a £12.9m deal has already been agreed with Dinamo Zagreb.

Levy has told Real he will accept nothing less than £105m for Bale, but there are now major doubts as to whether the Spanish club will be able to come up with the cash. Real have so far offered £86m, which was dismissed by Levy.

But Tottenham are still steeling themselves for another Madrid bid.

Spurs have already brought in Brazilian midfielder Paulinho, striker Roberto Soldado, and winger Nacer Chadli, with Etienne Capoue’s £9m move from Toulouse set to be completed within days.

Marca have started back-tracking, now the UK press seems to be following suit.

I'd say it's more likely that they've got bugger all else to write about, and putting this spin on it is at least one way to write a big story about Bale when they've got nothing to go on.

When it comes to the football press I've turned into a proper cynic :pompous:

If The Express story is true, we will be shelling out another £100m on those players mentioned. Surely not?

A couple of days ago one of the red top newsnow links went with the title 'Gareth Bale talks for the first time about his move to Real Madrid.

The quote in the article: 'I cant talk about it'

journalism seems a very easy profession to me.

First God created football agents.
Then He created red top football hack journalists.
Then, the hard work, He began creating an amoeba.

Serious question: do people think The Mirror and Express have got their info from here and COYS?

Yes they do. In 2006 when I was at Uni, I made couple of grand passing on info from COYS to john cross at the Mirror. This was before he was all over the radio! Used to get 50 pounds per story.

Used to give him stuff from Archibald, Dragon, Peanut, Ben et all....

He eventually found out though because loads of people from COYS complained to him. Nice while it lasted.

If your reading this john. Andy says hi!

Can i just add the the express chief football writer john richardson is just about the worst journo out there - he literally has no clue about the game itself and just sees football through the eyes of some half-baked transfer tittle tattle. Guy has shocking knowledge of the game!

Still off topic (sorry) but the BBC's chief football writer Phil McNulty is known by all in the biz as McNumpty. Reasons far too many to go into here.
