Now, this might have been debated before...but something didn't add up for me about this whole thing from Real's perspective. Bale....really? I don't think he has the stature that they usually go for commercially, and not to justify that amount being spent. Have we all just been a little arrogant in thinking Real were willing to pay that much for our player? Or was it just a big ruse to get Ronaldo to sign? Were Real ever going to spend £80m on 24yo Gareth Bale? He has too much developing to do, something Real aren't exactly fussed about.

This 'special relationship' could mean that we were happy for our name to be banded around for a summer - all it would do is raise our profile to be spoken of in the same breath as Real.

It would be pretty ironic after all of this bluster that the only direction a player may go is to Tottenham from Real Madrid.

The Ronadlo quote is a bit misleading.

The tone is lost in translation. He says 'Obviously I have my opinion, but I'm not going to make it in public'. Was a follow up to him saying, 'i'm not going to talk about players who don't play for Real Madrid'.

So he was certainly not saying anything negative. Although it's entirely possible he thinks the fee is ridiculous.

@KayLMurray: Cristiano Ronaldo on Bale: "I have my opinion, but I'm not going to say it in front of the cameras."
This,is how a professional footballer should behave when asked questions about a player who is contracted to another club.
Take note Marcelo,Ramos, and all the other real pricks who've spoken out of place, and that includes Ancelotti.
Ronaldo's shown more class with that one comment, than the whole of that pathetic excuse for a club has shown all summer.

Funny how Ronaldo is THE one, eh?

Perhaps his opinions can't be printed or Aired! ;)

Interesting quote from Dempsey at the bottom. Sounds like he was sure he'd be with us come Palace. Guess an opportunity came knocking for Levy that he couldn't refuse.

Think the opportunity was one Levy AND Dempsey couldn't refuse. The quote implies he was personally blown away by Seattle's offer.

mmmmm. I've been thinking and I really shouldn't.

What if we are using our "Special relationship" with Madrid on this deal. We have told Madrid that if we do not make champions league next season and Bale is up for it you can have him for "X" amount. Deal done. What we need is for Madrid and their PR machine Marca to get Bale in the press as much as possible. Tottenham will stay quite and let them do their thing and make sure the world knows about Gareth Bale.

With Mysterys latest ITK, Bale has been signing endorsements left right and center off the back of this. Should Bale not want to go next year we will give them some money in a brown envelope.

I love a good conspiracy theory.

I now both love, and truly believe this.

Edit: after a bit of time to think about it,this is definitely what has happened/is happening.
It all just makes so much sense.
