Been up around a month now hasn't it? the Bale thing. Can't imagine many banners stay up for long in Times Square, must cost a few bob. And even if it's replaced by someone/ something different for NBC, surely helps them promote it better by having different banners to market it. It's not like Bale was signed up to promote NBC (at least I don't think so), wouldn't look too much into it

I have some ever-so-slightly concerning news.

A mate at work (my job is in Times Square) has just texted to say they've pulled down the huge NBC Gareth Bale poster and have replaced it with a generic football one. I'll get a picture and post it once I get there.

I'm assuming they're just playing it safe, but I really liked & felt proud seeing him up there.

Now I'm sad.

It might have just been the end of a contract. Lord knows how much that billboard cost them to put up there.

Why does it have to mean anything at all? it's advertising space, no? Advertising space is purchased for a certain amount of time & then, when that time is up, the advertising space is purchased by someone else. What's to say our time isn't now up?

I'll get a picture in a couple of hours once I'm there (I suspect it may be up from other sources by then).

Worst-case-scenario, the people at NBC know something we don't - but I highly doubt it.

Most likely, they're trying to advertise the Premier League and bring in brand new viewers. If those potential new-comers google the (literal) poster boy, I'm sure NBC don't want them seeing news of him possibly leaving.

Update 214
Who: The Goat
When: 1st August
Where: SC
The Goat said:
Nothing concrete either way, but The Goat hears that at the moment one of companies he is advertising havent been told anything by his people about him moving. They have discussed contingency plans if he does go and they are concerned but this is based purely on the level of speculation going on at the moment not on any inside track. And there has been no deliberate effort to start removing him from advertising. So basically no one should read anything into any changes of adverts/billboards at the moment - its all coincidence, they plan to cycle different ads and billboards on a fairly regular basis.

I've worked in Times Square for about 8 years and once stuff goes up, it stays. I can't think of a single poster that's been up this short amount of time - *especially* when it's advertising a coming TV event/season premiere. Why would you change it this close to the start of the season unless it's one of the reasons I posted above (that they know something or it's not generating the positive reaction they're after)?

My guess is they got cold feet from all of the rumours, but I highly doubt NBCSports is privy to any info about Bale that hasn't already been leaked as rumour elsewhere.

I'm maybe naive, but how would the people behind Times Square advertising board, know of a deal that he's sold before we do.

I see it, as maybe the contracts run out, or they've taken it down as a precautionary measure from the rumours flying around.

Exactly.

People reading way too much into stuff that is still very much up in the air.

It's at times like these I am so glad Levy is in charge and not me. I would have lost my nerve days ago.

advertisers are the last to find out.

The premier league have no say in who a club signs or sells so how could it inform an advertiser before an event has taken place?

But perhaps with that particular advert being NBC's advert for PL football, it's a case of alternating different pictures of different players from different teams etc etc? It's not GB/THFC that they're advertising is it (y)

This,it was unveiled on the 8th July, exactly 28 days ago......seems like a normal amount of time to rent the space for.

It depends on who they put up next, but it really makes ZERO sense for them to only highlight a Tottenham player, especially since in terms of notoriety Tottenham is not high up on the list in the US.

(Edit: I live here. Trust me our popularity is nowhere near the likes of Arsenal, Man U, or Chelsea. I love that we get the exposure, but others have something to say about it too.)

Yes but it could/would make sense for other clubs to feel we're gaining an unfair advantage in marketing possibilities due to being the only team advertised in one of the worlds busiest marketing areas, yet in an advert for the whole of the PL.

I would suggest to go watch NBC Premier League ads and see how much we're shown. Hell, they've even got a character as OUR 'new' head coach. We're high up on the list with NBC as far as I can tell.
