Indeed he did. We've got a strange association with the number 9 as I can't remember anyone bar Berbatov wearing it while being our best striker. It just doesn't seem a very special number for strikers at Spurs.
10 - Hoddle (obvs not a striker) Lineker, Sheringham, Keane, Kane (why does he wear 9 for England?)
18 - Klinsmann, Defoe and even Kane for a bit
8 - Greaves

Darren Anderton wore 9 for most of the 90s as a winger / midfielder. Nayim wore it as a winger, Waddle as you said. Maybe Archibald wore it? But was that 8? Martin Chivers?

If i was lamela i would give up my 11 to a spurs legend. Especially when im not even a starter. Cant even hold a candle to bale. Im just a squad player. Shouldnt have any rights to stand in the way of a legendary fairytale come back

Rule M4 from the PL handbook says that a player must retain the squad number allocated for the season, whilst at the club.

However, the fixed fine for breaching this is £2,500. So 11 is not off the table - is indeed a matter of respect. Or business.

£2.5k? Half the players probably make that back in the time it takes them to write the cheque out.
