Woah woah woah, I'm getting ratings in this thread left, right and centre for my first post in it, yet people are seemingly ignoring my second post.

Context people, sarcasm detectors on!

Don't get too stressed about it mate....i've made a bigger cock up than saying Bale won't make it.....i said months ago that i think Caulker won't make it at Spurs and tbh i think he is crap...and look what a mug i look now.

PS..WE'RE FOOKED IF VERTS IS INJURED.:)

Oof! Bumping old threads like this and making people look silly with the benefit of much hindsight seems wrong to me! Just saying!

I always thought he was going to be a left back for us. At the time, his best work came from deeper positions and he was crowded out of games on the wing.

I don't think any of us thought he'd develop into the player he's become to be fair.

Mine was sarcasm though, it was too early to tell.

Yours isn't sarcasm and it's too early to tell. I think expecting a 21 year old centre back (which is a mature position) to be absolutely shit hot and not make a mistake is rather foolish. Vertonghen only really broke through at Ajax around that age.

I didn't...

He hasn't built on last season and I don't believe he'll make it at spurs.
Are you serious mate? Hope you were kidding. He is 19, he was injured at the end of last year. We are what 4 games into this season?? He showed for Wales what he is capable of...give the guy a chance..

Bit too much that comment, even by your standards

yea it was tongue in cheek, exactly what people were saying about Lennon when he turned 20

Not meant to take the piss at all, it's just funny to look back on threads like this and see what our expectations were. I doubt anybody expected Bale to hit the level he is now, especially after his first couple of seasons for us.

I remember thinking Bentley would be a great signing too. It's funny how things pan out.

To be fair, Bale himself was quoted as saying he thinks his best position was left back - so no one knew it seems!

is a left back and should always be a left back.

Will people on this board and other board's who suggest he should play left midfield get real. He does not have a trick or the electric pace to play out wide. He does his best work coming from deep on to a ball instead of having his back to play receiving it.

As for people who question his defensive ability he is 19 for godsake!!

awesome

i still remember when benny got injured and a lot of people wanted to move bassong to left back rather than play bale.
