call me slow, but with all this talk of signing a DM this summer and various exotic names such as Veloso, Lucho(?), Moukoun et al, are we not over looking a player with prem experience and a spurs fan to boot.
just a thought:whistle:

I dunno really. I think for the price that Villa are asking (around £13m, I believe), we could find much better else where. But as you say, for a position like that Premiership experience is a must. It's always a gamble buying a young 'star' from a foreign league.

Don't see why he'd leave villa for anywhere other than a CL team.

Barry is a yid and we could do a lot worse. We could do a lot better too though.

This is a Zakora/Zokora style gripe so no offence but for the last time Lucho Gonzalez is NOT a defensive midfielder. He's essentially a good Jenas - a box-to-box attacking midfielder.

To which I'd add, he's also an effective tackler and doesn't get bullied.

change of scenery? european football (albeit uefa cup)? who knows. after all, he's been at villa all his career so maybe a move could be good for him and us.

Plus, according to various news media (obviously a pinch of salt needed), he's one of Benitez's top targets. We'd have to pull off a major coup (again) to net him.

Neither does Jenas really - his defensive play is very good, he's just not a DM because of his mobility. I like Jenas' style, he just doesn't seem to step up to the plate and dictate the tempo like Gonzalez does.

Barry's not a defensive midfielder. Reo-Coker is

Can't see it myself, we're not a million miles away from Villa so it'd be a step sideways for him I feel, I'm sure his head has been turned by the Liverpool interest and the bright lights of CL.

err what?

Barry is both, reo-coker tends to play the invisable man

Both used to be 'all-rounders' (sorta JJ/Lucho style). These days (well, since he went to Villa) Reo-Coker plays the holding role, allowing Barry to do his thang.

Barry is not a defencive midfielder.

he's played defensive midfielder (and LB) a million times and looked very capable. He is a defensive midfielder first and foremost, it just so happens that last year he went on a mega scoring run and has been encouraged to get forward more - a bit like Carrick was last season at United.

Barry is a very very good and underated player, i live with a villa season ticket holder and he has been raving about him for 3yrs now, i've had to suffer watching nearly every villa televised game (he records them even if he goes) and i must admit along wih laursen, he really is the hub of the villa team. If he was at utd and playing like he has this season then the price would be more like 25mil...

Don't agree Mr Kendall.

I read a big interview with Reo-Coker a few months back where he was talking about how he's adapting to life as a defensive midfielder at Villa, and how it differed from life as a box-to-box player at Wimbledon/MK Dons and West Ham. He also talked about how it allowed Barry more creative licence. Barry is not, and never has been a defensive midfielder. He started out at left-back, then he moved to left-midfield, and now he's really making a name for himself as a box-to-box central midfielder.

You are right that reo-coker is doing more of the devensive duties this season, but before that barry was the DM in the villa team... he also has been doing a pretty good job of it for England this season as well... he is definately i the carrick mold in terms of passing and tackling, he just seems to have a bit more energy and a better running game than carrick
