You are right that reo-coker is doing more of the devensive duties this season, but before that barry was the DM in the villa team... he also has been doing a pretty good job of it for England this season as well... he is definately i the carrick mold in terms of passing and tackling, he just seems to have a bit more energy and a better running game than carrick

Maybe baby.

I have this idea of what a defensive midfielder is, and Barry just isn't it. There's a hard as nails types like Poulsen. The solid as a rock types like Makalele. The tidy, deep laying passers like Carrick... Barry is none of them. I think the fact that he does his defensive duties, along with the fact he started out as a defender cause people to think of his as a prodominatly defensive player. I see calling Barry a defensive midfielder no different to calling Jenas one. Or Lucho for that matter.

All of the above said, I could well be talking out of my arse. Still, it's livening up a slow evening :)

I take your point he isn't what you would call a typical DM although imo he is ver much a carrick type of player, i could never see him and carrick playing in the same team together? I think he's an allround good midfielder and can be a very very good AM DM or mixture of both. Yes we should definately sign him but there is no way on this earth he would leave villa for us, he's the club captain, loved by the fans and the managment and would have no reason to come to us??

If he is a lifelong yid, then his tackling, passing and 110% effort against any opponent, supposedly worthy of his talents or not, Barry is just the kind of experienced, battle hardened and wisened Premiership player I'd want with Modric bossing midfield. I'd take him over Lampard, SWP, Ballack, Alonso, Parker, Barton and virtually anyone other than maybe Gerrard.

But I agree that CL footy may be enough to tempt him to Pool. He'd really have to have white and blue blood in his veins to turn that down and join us. That's assuming we're interested, and I've seen and heard nothing anywhere to suggest we are suitors.

he's probably too expensive and out of our reach now -

but we had the chance to buy him years ago at probably half the price- and quite a few people on here including me wanted him at the Lane - but we were told by lots of sages on here and on other sites 'not good enough' not top 4 material won't take us up a level and all the old guff people so often come up with -

totally missing the point - would he have improved the squad - yes - would he have improved the team - yes - did a lot of Spurs fans miss the point - yes(probably quite a few of them with some foreign fancy sounding name stars in their eyes that they'd vaguely heard about or may even have seen a couple of times)

Barry will go to Liverpool - I don't think the fact that he is a Spurs fan will cloud his judgement, nor the fact that Gerrard is his best friend - he wants to play Champions League and that is the deciding factor!

Yup. Gareth Barry doesn't have pin ups of his favourite Spurs player on his bedroom wall, nor does he rush home to discard his muddy Villa shirt to don our Tottenham whites just as the 4.00pm on Sky Sports 1 kicks off.

He most likely doesn't have a Cockerel car freshener hanging off his mirror either, or Spurs cushions on the back seat.

Safe to say, his personal allegiences will not influence his career defining decision in front of him.
