Maybe West Ham were trying to get him to reduce his wages etc? 🤔
Well yeah the article says Maguire would want in the region of £7m to leave OT at the wages offered. Still, a multimillionaire killing his career over what is for him another few quid. Doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe he's afraid of the many, many caricatures that will inevitably be drawn when such a massive head joins such a massive club...

They’ve already got a walking caricature of him.

Must admit I don't get it from Raya's perspective. Going from Brentford and a guaranteed premier league number 1 spot, surely his next move would have to be a guaranteed number 1 spot somewhere else? Even if Arsenal are a 'good' club and Europe and everything... and even if I think overall he's better than Ramsdale... he's not gonna be playing that much this season which feels like a really odd choice (especially given the Euro's are in the summer so his Spain slot is under threat).
It is actually very easy to explain, it is Money. I love when pundits say we can not attract players because we are not in Europe. Chelsea says hi. Saudi says hi, it is all about Money and maybe selling the future. But 99% Money

This was a decent discussion. Working the system through depreciation isn't new and I don't think Chelsea's model is that revolutionary. The accounting or booked value is a bit of a false but legal and standardised reporting approach, but the risk of overpaying doesn't disappear just because the industry does this as standard practice. They made a loss on Havertz, for example, but not much of one (Bought for 72M, sold for 65M). That's a real loss of 7M over some time frame, plus his wages while he was there. The idea that they 'booked' 25M profit on Havertz this window is just accounting paperwork that allows them (and any other team) to spread the costs in their favour. But that mechanism isn't limitless. There are real costs. They made a real financial loss. ANd every team has this and a lot worse than HAvertz (just an example)...like Bakayoko.

The fact is, they'll get away with it if they are successful. And they'll be like Everton if they're not. The constraints will come in straightforward ways. If they land players for high fees and high salaries that don't work out, they need to find buyers to offset their losses. It's not really much of a model to rely on other clubs making worse mistakes in the market than you (ala Everton).

The bigger issue is why don't the Premier League rein this in a bit and ensure a stronger framework that won't endanger clubs' solvency. The Spanish league requires an audit ahead of a season, which then sets the player registration budget cap. That seems sensible and doable and has helped the league rein in Barcelona and saved Barca from themselves.

And Jordan is right about the FFP penalties in the PL. Chelsea, City, Everton and others shouldn't be allowed to build this in to their operating model. That's not the point of a penalty and we shouldn't incentivize the old NY Yankees model of pricing in fines that doesn't do much to enforce salary caps (in baseball).

Stands to miss out on next year's Euros if he doesn't. Southgate's not going to be able to justify selecting Man Utd's 5th choice CB for his squad.
I think that kind of misses the point.

Whether he stays or goes - he is no better than Man Utd's 5th choice CB - and that should not be the level of a England National Team member...

If he goes to a lower team to play - he isn't a better player, the competition for minutes is getting worse.

Wouldn't put anything past Southgate at this point. He started three games last season prior to the World Cup and got picked. Two of those three was the opening two games they lost and conceeded 6 goals to Brighton and Brentford.
