I was discussing the Zeki Fryers situation with a friend and we got talking about Gerard Pique and another friend got involved. This is what he wrote. Gerard Pique: 12 apps in 4 years case closed (referring to his time at Man Utd). For me a average defender, no where near the worlds best but gets away with it as plays for a Barca side who hardly have to defend! Bring back to top 4 club in England would be a weak link.

I must admit I haven't seen too much of Barcelona this year (I always thought Pique was class though) but is this in anyway accurate?

That's the same sort of argument that Messi/Xavi/Iniesta can only look good at Barcelona I just don't buy it.

You do realise that Barca's success does rely on having quality centre backs too? They may have the ball for 89 minutes and 59 seconds every match but without discipline at the back they'd just ship goals left right and centre.

When 8 out of 11 players in your team are in the opponent's half you gotta be damn confident in your centre backs doing the job when things go wrong.

Pique and Puyol are immense, and Mascherano has also done very well adapting to the role.

Last season Barca conceded 29 goals, the year before that 21, and the year before that 24. Least in all 3 seasons. They're clearly not relying on a "score more than the other team" tactic.

well they kinda are - they do need to score more than the other team to win matches. ;)

Bloke is talking crap. Good in the air, reads game well. Set piece threat. How Many titles???????????? If He was still there Ferdinand and Vidic would both be sitting on the bench

People have said the same-thing over the years numerous times about Puyol who is a complete legend. Pique is class and will be for years yet. All defenders get stitched up from time to time it's part and parcel with the position.

Weird how people still believe that Barca (and their defenders) hardly put any work in defending. Season after season they actually have one the best defensive records both in La Liga and the CL. It's actually the way Barca put so much emphasize on defending - hardly any (top) team put so much emphasize in winning back the ball so quickly - that is a major part of their success. They do not play football like Spurs did under Ardiles.

And Pique has no easy time sitting at the back...and he is in fact one of the top CB in Europe.

He is absolute class, and I bet ol red nose wishes he had never sold him! Not only is he a very good cb he also plays well out if defence and chips in with a few goals as well.

definitely with all the injuries them wankers have had at the back recently

Vidic is looking very injury prone these days and he's the only central defender they have who's in Piques class

To be fair to Whiskey he has Evans coming through who just completed a strong season playing at Sunderland and was showing stronger signs of development than Pique, obviously now Evans doesn't hold a candle to Pique.

Guess it made sense for everyone at the time, Pique went back to club he was brought up in and now he's reaping the dividens

Your mate's not having a good week. First the old footage of his debate with Harry (over Scotty Canham) comes out and now this nonsense about Pique.

His ability on the ball for a CB is up there with Ledley King. A great player!
