Fans are always critisising players for 'stitching up their club' and pushing for transfers, but I think it's time we got a reality check. I was reminded of this with the recent transfer talk of "Bad Boy" Chimbonda's possible move to Valencia - in the papers he is labeled a trouble maker for various things (some fairly such as his behaviour in the carling cup) including his transfer request at Wigan.
Now I personally cannot see what is wrong with a footballer wanting to move clubs for valid reasons including:
1. A move to a bigger club
2. A move to a higher league
3. A move to a different country
4. A move for the opportunity to play in competitions
and yes
5. A move for financial reasons
There a recountless examples of all of these but the most prominent one is currently the ronaldo saga.
Ronaldo last season almost single-handedly won the double for man utd and now feels he has achieved the the pinnacle of success there. He now wants a fresh challenge and the opportunity to play for Real Madrid is surely to good to pass up. He gets to play for another of the worlds most famous clubs, retain a very realistic chance of silverware (domestic and european), live the lifestyle, and yes double his money.
Money is often seen as the 'evil' target of all footballers. But in reality who wouldn't move jobs if you were being offered twice the money to do the same job?
Now don't get me wrong, I too like hearing about players who want to play for their boy-hood club and stay forever but I also think that sometimes this is not all good - I think it was a real shame that I never got to watch Ryan Giggs running the wing for Barcelona or Milan.
It all boils down to honesty for me - as long as a player is honest about his intentions then we should'nt criticise. Some players are up-front (Diarra for example who openly has said that he wants to earn himself a chance at a 'big' club by playing well for portsmouth - isn't this what all lower league players do?) but some are not (Sol Judus Brutus Campbell comes to mind). So lets lay off the players for a while.....besides if we get £8 million for Chimbonda, good luck to him!
