Opta stats say otherwise. Top three keepers ranked on successful distribution: Howard (299), Reina (290), Gomes (277). And Gomes has played five games less than the other two.

How does this work? Maybe we have a lot of goal kicks?

Who here can say that Gomes doesn't kick the ball like he's got his boots on the wrong feet?

When we have a settled back 4, Gomes will get better and better imho.

its a fair point, i would just like the club to bring in a GK with some real hunger to be a no.1 somewhere, I think Begovic would have been perfect but obviously he chose stoke. Maybe a younger keeper like Joe Lewis or Westwood. For me Cudicini is a sound back up but Gomes knows when he is fit or even half-fit he will be playing.

Without Di-versing too much, I think that comes down to Redknapp again and how he uses his squad for competition. Remember how Lennon improved his game after Bentley arrived, it was just the push he needed.

I live in Peterborough and have seen Joe Lewis. He's a competent shot stopper, but he's rubbish at crosses and commanding his area.

Although I agree that gomes' distribution it good, you have to take into account the amound of short throws to LB/RB and the fact that he has crouch to aim for. Does it count as possension retained after intial header or just the first header?

1st season: 1st half terrible, 2nd half very good
2nd season: Brilliant all season
3rd season: Poor

Like any player he's just going through a dip in form, just like any player - goalkeepers are no different. If he had another 2 seasons of this form then I'd be a bit worried and would be looking at replacing him, fortunately my memory goes back further than most so I know what he's capable of and he's a TOP keeper.

It is a good job none of the people who post on this forum are involved in the coaching set up, because right now we would have lost corluka, palacios, dawson, gomes, lennon, ekotto, jenas etc in fact i think we would have lost just about the whole team.. Gomes is human like everyone else in the spurs squad and is just going through a rough patch, other keepers deemed better than him have made just as many mistakes. The big man has my support and I hope to see him in a spurs jersey for many years, he is the best we have had in a long time.

He made enough saves in the Blackburn game to be said to have preserved the 3 points for us...and apart from his blunder, yesterday, dominated his area reasonably well. He is still relatively young for a 'Keeper and was actually a striker until he was 19 (or summit - did you know that?). Yeah, he makes blunders, but so did/does every 'Keeper. I'm really not sure we could do better (in terms of who would come to us/who we could afford).

Get behind the Octopus (Eek).

Gomes? As a striker?

Gomes? As a striker?

You didn't know this:shrug: He played as a striker in Brazil until he was somehting like 19. It was only because he went to a game and the 'Keeper couldn't make it, with no reserves, and they chose him 'cos he was tall. And the rest, as they say, is history:grin:

I love Gomes as much for his blunders as for his genius. He reminds me a lot of Bruce Grobbelaar, without the match-fixing bollocks. A great character between the sticks and a great keeper to boot.

Life isn't ever going to be dull with him around. Long may he stay at the club.

You know what you get the Gomes, he can be stunning, but he is also liable to an error now and again. I think people need to think back to our run-in last season and some of his heroics, how he single handedly kept out an Arsenal barrage then did almost the same against Chelsea and a few handy ones against Citeh.

Just 5 days ago, we'd probably have lost against Blackburn had it not been for Gomes.

It is also worth remembering that pretty much all keepers have messed up this season; Reina had a clanger in pretty much the first game, VDS too, even today with Cech - if Gomes had done that, we'd pretty much have another one of these threads.

We won't get better than Gomes, so just accept the occasional error and applaud the genius.

I love a good knee-jerk thread, Gomes is responsible for global warming.

Dont miss next week when Gallas will be responsible for the rise of Neo-Fascism and our old favourite knee-jerk subject, Jenas, will be blamed for the sinking of the Titanic.

Some people need to get a fucking grip.

We're running a football club-not a circus.

On a serious note, if Gomes doesn't get his head together before the end of the season, I fully expect Harry will be looking to address the situation.

If you want a replacement goalkeeper, please tell me one that doesnt make mistakes ?

This. I'm getting really sick of threads claiming that we should 'get rid' of Spurs players when they're off form. No player is immune from lapses, no matter what impression Sky, the tabloids, and MOTD may give.

He's a very very good goalkeeper. His form is shit at the moment, but he's still currently probably better than most in the EPL.

He's a confidence player, and his confidence has been damaged by being very exposed this year.

Goalkeepers need to form an understanding with their CBs. Our CBs have changed and changed and changed again this season. Half the time we've played with no DM to speak of. The rest of the time Wilson has been playing poorly.

All of these have sapped his confidence.

Give him a stable pair of CBs, and have Palacios regain his form (or another DM), and the Octopus will be back.

As a comparison - Lennon's another one who I'd certainly label a 'confidence player'. Capello shot his confidence to shit, and his form suffered. Now Harry's shown faith in him and has been consistently giving him his right wing realm, his confidence is returning and so is his form. These aren't bad players, they just need managing appropriately. It ain't brain-surgery.

I know he's a likeable guy and keepers all have their fair share of mistakes but it seems like he has more than the average. I wouldn't mind a replacement if the right candidate became available in truth.

He's not a bad goalkeeper, I just wouldn't put him amongst the elite. Keepers better than him in the league IMO:

Hart
Given
VDS
Cech
Renia
Foster

I know that will be debated by a few people but, as I said, this is purely my opinion based on current form.

If a top keeper became available then I see no issue in replaceing Gomes. I love his athletism and his shot stopping....but his control of the box, communication, handling and concentration are all sub-par.

...and the rest...

- Jaaskaleinan has been arguably one of the best in the Pl for a while.
- Al Habsi up therw with the best this season, as has robinson.

He's obviously a decent keeper and a cracking bloke and i'm not saying there's necessarily anyone available right now that would be an upgrade, i just think folk should start acknowledging that this seaosn especially, he's been left wanting.

Do you watch many Man City reserve games?

As has been said on here, I think all keepers play better when there is a settled defence, particularly Centre Backs.
