How many points do we think Gomes has cost us over the season?

Far less than our strikers I'm sure.

thing is that even if people are basing it on chelsea , it wasnt a goal and chelsea were lucky twice .Useless refs

Don't blame the refs, its FIFA's and in particular Sepp Blatter's fault. The refs get zero help.

Been watching Al Habsi a lot this season and he seems a fantastic keeper all round. Would love to get this guy in to put pressure on Gomes and even push on to be number 1 cause cudichini and stipe are certainly not banging any doors down

Gomes was awesome last season and there's a good keeper somewhere there maybe some strong competition for his place will give him the kick up the arse he needs

I'm a Gomes fan, but his confidence has gone. Worryingly it went when the season became a pressure cooker. As a goalkeeper you are the foundation of the team, if your teammates lose confidence in you, if the fans lose confidence in you then you've got to move on.

We now need to outlay 10-15 million minimum on a keeper, this didn't seem an issue in the first half of the season.

I'm one of Gomes's biggest defenders, our best keeper since Clemence. People desperate for him to be replaced have seriously short memories of some of the awful keepers we've had in recent memory

Having said that, something snapped in me today. It was like when Barthez was at United, a character but we'll never be taken seriously while he's between the sticks

It was appears from his mistakes is that the size of the ball is smaller than the one used in training. The main problem in my opinion is to limit the shots being aimed at our goalkeeper, until then we will always have problems with goalkeepers making errors. Its the law of averages.

I am struggling to find what difference the size of a football makes, when a keeper makes the mistake like gomes made yesterday. That was nothing more than woeful keeping, no matter what size the football is, it shouldn't be fumbled and then be able to pass through your legs. If i keeper fumbles the ball and he's got his technique correct it shouldn't end up going through his legs.

This is a good shout if Wigan goes down, Al Habsi has been arguably their best player this year and would be a really able backup/competition for Gomes, who is definitely going through a bad period.

I do wonder whether the lack of venom/threat from our strikers might be having an impact on Gomes, in that he isn't being tested enough in training, so when he comes across these belters in a match, he's not as prepared as he needs to be.

Gomes has got more holes than cheese recently but I hope he stays and gets his confidence level up for next season. He really needs a fresh start and some may say that he should have a fresh start in another team but I think that.. yes he has made a few gaffs this season but he has also saved our arses a few times aswell so it's a bit of both and tbh we are only struggling really because of our strikers.

Gomes with a confidence boost and a new striker or two and we'll be in good shape for next season!

When everyone's calmed down will people release Gomes is still up there with the best...we've been on TV a lot i'm pretty sure other keepers making mistakes too. That blunder apart and lets be frank IT WAS NOT A GOAL regardless of the cock up the whole ball never crossed the line, gomes actually made some good saves.

People may say he should have caught Drogba's second free kick the truth of the matter was he dealt with a moving ball and did not concede.

No, we won't because he's wank.

4 Blunders in 5 games is not acceptable.

He's not 'wank' is he though? Last season he was arguably the best keeper in the league and you don't do that by being 'wank'.

He's going through a rough patch and the question is whether his rough patches are eclipsed by the times when he's at his best. I think this season he's getting close, or already at the stage, where he's costing us more than he's gaining us which is why we should at least consider replacing him.

To say he's 'wank' though is daft.

With Gomes I firmly believe that its not a question of ability, he has everything you would want in a Keeper. His problems are all in his head, when he makes a mistake he seems to lose all self-belief and confidence and this leads to more mistakes and subsequently a bad run of form.

Maybe a crazy suggestion, but the club could look to bring in a sports psychologist or something? Could be of benefit to certain players like Gomes

Quite.

The numbers certainly don't suggest that. From a save percentage pov he has been one of the better goalies in the league since he came to us. He ranked 7th in his first season, 2nd last season and despite people calling for his head is currently in 5th spot this season.

Obviously the sort of goals he lets in is the problem, but purely from the numbers he has been great for us.

Agreed.

His numbers suggest he has plenty of ability and if someone could sort him out I truly believe we would have one of the top keepers in the world.

I agree with this. I think we should bring in a young up and coming keeper that can compete with him week in week out for his place.

What did he do that was so amazing last year that any normal keeper wouldn't of been able to do?

As someone has pointed out, the stats show he was the second best keeper in the league last season. So he was able to do what 18 other 'normal' keepers couldn't do.

Last season he was superb. This season he's been cack ever since Ibter away. Don't know why, don't really care if I'm honest, I think hoping that next season he's back to last seasons brilliant form would be a foolish risk to take.
