Well not really, it was as much the lack of any understudy whatsoever and Gomes' groin injury picked up against Pompey. Rednapp did pick Cudicini ahead of Gomes for one or two games, even this might have been due to Gomes' not regaining fitness, and he soon saw who was superior and hey presto, we went on a streak of conceding very few goals.

There isn't really much to add to BC's initial post. I would agree that Gomes' kicking is not his strength, he doesn't get the weight behind that he should but being as that leads to attacks building on the carpet from the back and being as our current attack is Defoe and Keane I am not worried- in fact that 'weakness' promotes good football so who can complain.

I don't want to attack some third party's opinion but how they can value Cudicini ahead of Cech is mind boggling. It reminds me of a mate of my brother who was a Chelsea season ticket holder and thought Drogba was the weak link in their team. Season ticket holders can be clueless. The fact that Chelsea have won Championships, cups and made inroads in the Champions League since Cech's arrival speaks volumes. The geezer set a Premiership record for clean sheets for crying out loud. There is no doubting, sadly, that he is now more prone to errors since his injury but he is still a damn good keeper with few weaknesses.

Incidentally, though Ranieri initially looked to sign Cech, he never played a game under him- his debut was Mourinho's debut. I do also think that people may be forgetting Cudicini's errors, I remember he made one awful one at the Library where he literally let an easy ball go under him which Henry put in. If Gomes made that mistake, this site would be flooded with ridicule and hysteria.

Gomes is a better keeper, it's that simple. Cudicini would have to excel beyond what his current record and experience suggest to oust Gomes. I don't mind seeing Gomes make conspicuous errors because I know he will make up for them by saving shots and gathering loose balls that Cudicini has neither the physical agility or mental proactiveness to do. You cannot say Gomes would have saved Cole's shot, but he would have stood a better chance due to the above and his superior positioning.

Cudicini is a terrific keeper, just a notch down from Gomes. I think we are well covered, as well as can be- I certainly don't see the mileage in getting James but debating whether he should replace Gomes is akin to debating last year if Zokora should replace Palacios. Different levels of abilities entirely.

I can't believe people are discussing this!

Cudacini is a brilliant back up, but Gomes is world class!

Gomes is wouthout a doubt the better keeper but he hasnt particularly proved himself better than Cudicini. It is a good issue to have
