Not sure if you would have seen this if you weren't at the game, but the Octopus man was in all sorts of trouble yesterday, especially in the first half when he was right in front of us.

from the moment he came out of the tunnel, he was lifting his arm gingerly, trying to keep it moving seemingly so it wouldnt stiffen up-in addition to this, he was wincing with pain every time he went to ground to his right hand side-Jimmy Walker even got off the coach before the game, perhaps suggesting that Gomes might not make it through the warm-up so he'd be there if needed on the bench.

Basically, we have GOT to sign a goalkeeper and fast-if we ever have to play Alnwick, we will lose as he is simply atrocious, as we all know already.

Joe Lewis was there for the taking after our FA Cup game and we missed out on him for no apparent reason-splashing out a measly 2 million pounds on either him, or even Kieran Westwood from Coventry, could save us some vital points in the long run

All game v Fulham his right arm was barely moved after the collision with Zamora. When he did his warm ups in the goal, his jumping to the cross bar, he did his left arm over as usual and his right arm didn't get anywhere near!

Noticed on TV yesterday he looked in agony. If we can snap up Begovic for £1.5m or whatever has been spoken I would be very happy with that!

Personally I think he was making a meal of it. And yes I had a very good view of it from behind the goal. He appeared to be wincing for effect, but he mysteriously forgot about the pain when he quickly rolled the ball out to Charlie to try and launch a counter.

He appears to have one of those personalities where he needs to be loved and constantly told he is doing a good job. I think he's world class and I wouldn't swap him for anyone, but he is a pussy.

I mentioned in the Match Thread Gomes HAS to take responsibility for the way our defence dropped, which ultimately led to the equaliser.

Love the bloke but I would expect a good, let alone great, keeper to sort his defenders out better than that. And the ball dropping over his head twice before it hit the net was the icing on the cake. :-(

tbh he had a very good game, and was very solid.

The way he landed on his shoulder against Fulham didn't look good at all.

He is a big baby who really needs to toughen up!

Explain.

For me he is a very brave keeper that goes in where many goalkeepers fear to go. He continues to play on with injuries for the benefit of the team.

People who call him a baby are such nobs. How the fuck do you know how badly he has hurt himself?! Stupid presumptions. Oh its gomes, he must be faking it. WTF?! Get a life.

He's had a few injuries since we signed him, far more than most goalkeepers over the course of a season.

How odd....

He's still great though and wouldn't swap him for anyone!

Gomes is so tough he makes Chuck Norris pee his pants in fear.

He used to get up 2 hours before he went to bed and Share-Crop 5 million square miles of Brazilian Rain-Forst-Sugar-Beet-Bamboo with a tea-spoon - and lick the motorway clean, to boot:grin:

for his size i would expect hom to command his area more - especially in the air. For eaxmple that goal against B'ham - couldn't he have come out and punched/caught the ball?

True. And, of course, it's not his first. But only in as far as his 'goalkeeping'. Looking at how he organised his defence... I'd say that was incredibly poor for the last 20 minutes. Of course, an injury can take his mind off that and we had an experienced enough backline that they should have known better, but - for me - it had shades of that patch earlier this season where Petr Cech was getting stick from all corners for his terrible leadership and those games he blatantly cosat Chelsea by allowing his defence to drop too deep and conceding goals that cost them points; just as we did this weekend.

A minor abberation that hopefully never re-appears whatever its cause.

But... we didn't. We lost the ball playing keep-ball high up the pitch, and they scored on a semi-counter.

We may need to keep a higher line when 1-0 up; we also need to get a second on the counter. We also need to recognise that if our opponents start attacking in numbers, we will not find it as easy to control possession.

For the goal we were high up the pitch on the counter and carelessly gave it away, but I have to agree with Bill we had invited the impetus to Birmingham by defending incredibly deep for pretty much the entire 15 minutes. Even for the goal when the initial cross came into the box we had 7 outfield players behind the ball and when Dawson headed it we had 3 players on the 6 yard line. If we hadn't dropped so deep that would have been a routine catch for Gomes (and probably should have been) but the nerves set in and we lost shape.

You can feel it happening with us at the moment and the opposition fans seem to get buoyed by it which only encourages the opposition more. I don't know who should take responsibility for it, but there has to be someone on the pitch who is going to get into the guys and make them keep their shape.

"but he's the Octopus..he should be able to catch anything."

Bit unrelated, but thought i'd put that in from any earlier thread, about stupid things that fans say at the match. IMO, the single funniest thread of the year so far...

Gomes had nothing to do with us losing the game

It's our young naive players who constantly give the ball away for nothing after we go one up.

We need some composure and leader to calm down the team as we were hoofing the ball at every opportunity for no (*&(" reason. 1-0 up instead of keeping possesion making the opposition chasing shadows we are the one who had to run around winning the ball back and for what to put one hoof back into their half.

I pity Palacious who was working so hard to win the game for us.
