Its a similar secenario to fitting Modric and Kranjcar in the same team. We could put one in the middle and one on the left. but really, they're both best on the left. Just as Bentley and Lennon are best on the right. Just as Bale and Ekotto are at left back too. So we have great options. But i always prefer to see players in their natural positions.
It is great that Bentley has been on better form as of late, but lets not jump the guns and start rearranging the whole team to accommodate him and Lennon in the same team.

I think it is great we would now have a real contender for Lennon's position, it would keep him on his toes, and allows us to changing things in certain matches, to keep the opposition on there toes! We have looked a bit bit predictable of late, and I think with Bentley, Lennon and EG all in the mix it would give us real options for change during games!

Similarly kranjcar and Modric should offer competition and opportunities for changes during the game on the left - now if only we had the same choices in the middle!!

the future of bentley lies in the cm and left mid positions though ramos did sub him on as an attacking right back when we needed it and it worked that one time if memory serves

 This thread has me completely confused. I think honestly some of the things that have been said have melted my brain.

Anyway I am with the group that think it is a great thing that we have the extra option of Bentley on the right in addition to Lennon. He has got better in each game since he has been back.

First game played decently but was struggling with his crossing and was still doing the show boat at the wrong time and despite it being an encouraging come back I was still doubtful long term

Second game was better but he seemed to get the tempo of his play wrong, speeding things up when they needed to be slowed down and particularly vice versa. Crossing was definitely better and set pieces were excellent but still unsure of how he worked with Defoe (who seems to thrive on the type of delivery from the byline that Lennon produces)

Last night he was excellent, he was timing his decisions much better, he was still trying the odd trick but they were able to expose the full back. He was taking on the full back and beating him and was providing the type of ammunition from the right that Defoe can do something with. Defoe seemed to come alive once Bentley started doing it (and really should have scored more). Bentley playing like he did last night is able to offer a genuine top class alternative to Lennon. Now the trick is keeping it up for a consistent run.

He should start the next game and Lennon can get a run out from the bench if fit (not match sharp).

The very notion that he will be replaced by Aaron Lennon as soon as AL is fit would demoralize David Bentley - IMHO. He is still a better deliverer of the ball than Lennon - IMHO - and that is why he was bought in the first place. With Lennon you trade of the fact that he isn't as good as Bentley at delivering the ball as he is miles better dribbling and far faster; with Bentley you trade off the fact that he isn't as fast as Lennon, and can't dribble as well as him, as he does delver the ball better. Benltey slipped into the wilderness because Lennon suddenly developed some ability at delivering the ball at precisely the same time as Bentley was performing very poorly - not because Bentley had in any way lost his natural ability to delivery the ball - and it is a natural ability. So long as he is performing, he is easily the best deliverer of the ball that England has produced since Becks. He now seems to added desire and workrate. I say it is time for AL to have to fight for his position again; so long as DB continues to perform adn the team is doing well that is.

I don't think it should be about either of them loosing their place, I think it should be about options - when you have a few great players in the same position, you look at the opposition the style of play and rotate as necessary - same during a game, if one is not working, try the other for the second half, that is why they are called options - I would say the same with nico and Modric, last night it was Nico, Saturday probably Modric, and if it isn't working for Modders come half time, bring on Nico to change it up!

I am not advocating wholesale changes all the time, but as long as all the lads know the story they should all be fine with it .

I think Harry prefers the old adage, as long as they are doing fine don't change it - I kind of agree, but sometimes I think he waits too long, and gives too much of a chance - a half is enough, if Hudd is off form in the first half bring on JJ - If Crouch isn't doing it, bring on Pav - this style of Harry's is just pissing players off, that is what happened to Keane, it was happening to Pav, Bentley and also Hutton, and might happen to EG.

IMO they are all good players and deserved a a better chance at it then he gave!

Some come on Harry, you have the team, switch it up a bit!

Bentley deserves to continue.Fantastic performance last night albeit against a championship team. Even his overall workrate could not be faulted.Don't know what HR has said to him but it sure has worked looked like the forgotten man a couple of weeks ago.Press had him as the first one out of the door in January window.

A fully fit Lennon should come back into the team as he has done enough to deserve this.

Modric should only be deployed on the left at present and Harry is just going to have to make the tough decision on who starts out of him and Krancjar rather than cramming everyone in to try and keep people happy.

He could always loan Krancjar to Celtic to keep him happy...

Right Back? No way, that's open for JJ to step in...

lads bentley had a good game but it was against a league one right midfielder playing left back, lets not lose sight of that! im not bashing bentley and he did enough to start the next game, regardless of whether lennon is fit or not, but to suggest that he becomes a regular based on this performance and a couple of decent (not great performances) before the leeds game is taking things a bit too far.
lets see how he does against villa before we start getting carried away

who is he likely to be up against V Villa...

Their left-back is injured so it'll probably be Luke Young or Cuellar at left back, and i could see Bentley giving either a tough time (and Lennon though TBF)

TBH I can see Harry going 451 when Lennon is fit if Bentley's form continues. One on each flank, Modders knocking the short stuff ala Ossie around, Hudd pinging long balls ala Hoddle, Wilson biting legs like Graham Roberts and JD doing the Clive Allen thing. Wouldn't say no to that.
