Brighton have confirmed that they have suspended Gus Poyet and his coaching staff.
Poyet, assistant manager Mauricio Taricco and first-team coach Charlie Oatway have all been relived of their duties pending an internal investigation.
The Uruguayan is believed to have had a series of disagreements with the club's board over his transfer budget for the summer.
But Brighton declined to reveal the reasons behind the suspension of Poyet, who has three years remaining on his current contract.
A club statement read: "Brighton & Hove Albion has confirmed that it has suspended its manager, assistant manager, and its first team coach from their duties.
"The club will now follow its internal procedures with regard to this matter and will make no further comment at this time."
Poyet's future on the south coast was already the subject of intense speculation linking him to a number of vacancies.
He admitted he was "considering his options" following Brighton's play-off semi-final defeat by Crystal Palace on Monday.
The 45-year-old is reportedly on Everton's shortlist to replace David Moyes when he departs to take over at Manchester United in the summer.

Brighton and Hove Albion have suspended manager Gus Poyet and told him to stay away from the club pending an inquiry.

The Championship club also suspended assistant manager Mauricio Taricco and first-team coach Charlie Oatway.

The inquiry will investigate whether Poyet breached his contract with comments in the wake of this week's play-off defeat by Crystal Palace.

Poyet, 45, told BBC Sussex on Monday: "I will analyse where we can go and myself as well."

The Uruguayan has been manager of Brighton since 2009 and won promotion from League One in 2011.

He guided them to a fourth-place finish in this season's Championship, but the Seagulls failed to reach the play-off final, losing 2-0 on aggregate to Crystal Palace in the semi-finals.

"I have always said that all the time we keep improving, I am going to be at this football club, and the day we hit the roof, I'm not," Poyet said on Tuesday.

"I have got to think about myself as well sometimes.

"Every summer you sit down and analyse where you can go, where you can get or not and depending on that you have got a project or a way of getting better."

Poyet is under contract until 2016 but he has made no secret of his ambition to manage in the Premier League in the past, although herejected the opportunity to take charge of Reading in May.

I don't understand?

Just because he said he'll have to consider his options?

If a Tottenham manager spoke about the club like Poyet has about Brighton I wouldn't be too happy.

Bit of a kick in the teeth.

Bit of a kick in the teeth.

Especially when he was happy enough to sign a contract until 2016 when it suited him.

I thought it just sounded like a manager who was down after missing out on promotion. It sounded like he thought he had taken them as far as possible though.

Everton??
That's what I'm thinking. Something must have gone on anyways. Those quotes aren't exactly going to instigate such drastic recourse are they? Quite the overreaction if that is the reason.

Maybe he's been talking to other clubs anyway and BHA found out about it and are covering themselves.

A surveyor friend of mine who does work at Brighton's ground told me on thursday morning that Gus had signed for Everton not sure how true it actually is maybe he was putting 2+2 and coming up with 5

Everton would be barking mad to sign him. There a far better candidates around.

They need to look for someone with premiership experience.

Moyes joined Everton from Preston though so they might not be put off of recruiting from the lower leagues.

Who knows, wouldn't surprise me.

As Steve says though, would have thought they'd look at a few other candidates but if this done already then it seems they're very keen on Poyet as their first choice and tbf to him, he hasn't done badly at Brighton at all. A promotion two strong seasons in the champs and now in the playoffs at the end of the second one. A couple of good cup victories. And as nailsy points out, Everton took a plunge on a champ manager before as it didn't end in disaster. They obviously just see something in him if they're this keen. Not sure he'll be all that enamoured with his transfer budget at Everton though.

As long as they steer clear of MON or Hughes they have a chance of avoiding relegation and utterly shite football.

Cue Maureen shocking the whole world and signing with Everton. :)

O'Neill to Everton?

This is a problem with the pl. Very rarely do you see a manager coming up from the lower leagues unless its because of promotion. It's just a big old merry go round with the same faces rotating jobs- Martin o'neill, mark Hughes, Steve Bruce, etc etc.
